All of them will need to be placed near the artic circles, much of Antarctica will be ice free,it will be too hot everywhere else.
I'd like to see humans live in giant million person buildings. We would only need 10,000 for the entire population.
We could call them "cities".
To be serious, there is a big problem with excessively large buildings - they have a large cooling load and (presuming they are a normal shape) not much surface area.
That being said, there is the very ambitious "The Line" project in Saudi Arabia, which is basically a plan for a single building containing 9 million people, but which extends over 170 km in a straight line.

That's fine. Everything would be in easy walking distance. No cars, streets,or any of that nonsense. People in the US have to embrace austerity. Our consumer lifestyle is a thing of the past.
Cities are pretty dense without going to a single building. Also, I like fresh air!
SLL - what are the dimensions of your million inhabitant building?
Big enough. There will be fresh air. The balconies can be used for parks. There can be bike and running tracks, tennis courts, basketball, that kind of thing.
You need to answer the question of the dimensions, so we can look at other issues. At the moment it could be a row of terraced houses a couple of thousand kilometers long (for a million people).
Perhaps. I will have Pharaoh like status. Most people will be recycled for fertilizer.
And that's just daft.
Huge. We will have to decide on minimal standard living space per individual, and support structures like plumbing pantry space, where we collect our food, recreation space then multiply. I guess it will be about four times as large as the current 250,000 building currently being constructed.

Shimizu Mega-City PyramidThis proposed arcology-pyramid would be built over Tokyo Bay and house one million people. The structure would be 2,004 meters (6,575 feet) tall and include businesses, parks, and other services. The pyramid would be built using automated robots and would be powered by algae and a photovoltaic coating. The project was announced in 2004 by the Shimizu Corporation and was featured on the Discovery Channel's Extreme Engineering series.

Ziggurat PyramidThis proposed pyramid city would be powered by solar, wind, and natural sources and would be capable of running off the grid. The city would also have an efficient public transportation system that would run horizontally and vertically. The Ziggurat Project was proposed in 2008 by Timelinks, a Dubai-based environmental design company.

We already have plans for quarter of a million person buildings. Agriculture for the population would come from giant automated plantations, much more efficient. We could let 3/4 of the land revert to wilderness.
