Why does this have to be the case?
Have you considered that in some cases it's quite more "progressive" to play multiple players because of their variete in playing styles in congruence to playing against 1 player respectively.

Sometimes I don't play a second game because I already hit "new game" and another player accepted before I got an offer for a rematch. Or, maybe some people want to get better, and dont want to play someone they just crushed.
