One of my profs in grad school liked to talk about a couple of professor types: the dull plodder and the universal genius. He thought being a universal genius was a prerequisite to success in literary scholarship, while I thought that 90% of litcrit was obviously the work of dull plodders.
The sciences are no different, except that most are good at math.
Which IQ tests score up to 190?

Yeah, most people are pretty average, even in a college setting.
(Of course it depends on the college and degree program, but still)

I don't care about what people think.Â
Â
Which is why you’re on chess.com asking for stranger’s opinions.

Yes, and I don't want to be average. It sucks being average.
Ok, but that's not what makes life good, and it's not what makes people like you, that's more of a "mommy didn't hug me" issue. Having a super high IQ isn't going to solve that issue

If (or when) it turns that I have a high IQ (175+), then I'd be less depressed.

Higher IQ, higher expectations. Be average in abilities and do something great. Being depressed because you didn't receive the greatest gifts is what toddlers do Christmas morning.

The sad thing is people will make milestones like this. When I do well on an IQ test, or when I get married, or when I get a particular job or when I buy a house.
"I'll be happy when ______"
And on the next day, the person wakes up, gets out of bed, and is just as miserable as they were last week. So it's on to the next thing, until they're married, have a house, job, and a high IQ, and are still miserable.
First of all, be willing to love yourself for who you are, and then find people who like you for you too. If you have problems that go deeper counseling can help, but a high IQ score... probably not.

I'll be happy if I get a turkey tomorrow morning. My alarm goes off in six and a half hours so I can be on the road at 4:00 am and in the woods by 5:00. If I don't get a turkey, I'll be happy that I spent three hours in the woods before 8:00 am. If I go back to bed after the alarm wakes me, I'll be happy that I've already made the morning's coffee.

haha

Were you an English professor? I scoff. Math and astrophysics are better and require more brain power.Â
Â
I'm currently working for the Dept. of Engineering. I've taught history, literature, and education. My work for engineering is of a historical nature.
Math and sciences were my easy subjects in school. People are more complex and this complexity drove me into history.

I did not ask for my score when I took an IQ test in college, but recall that the tester laughed and said, "you shouldn't have difficulty in college." I do remember two friends in graduate school who each scored two 800s (in three categories) on the Graduate Record Exam. They were geniuses. I only scored one 800 (700 was at the 99th percentile).

It is too bad that Mensa does not take post-2001 GRE scores for admission. Everything has been dumbed down.
All hail the new LT.

High IQ is certainly not a gateway to happiness. Don't know where you got that idea.
Ditto.

"Ignorance is bliss" - BS to me
I'm speaking from personal experience, maybe you might be the next Feynman (he was a genius AND a very charismatic individual).

We are in agreement here. Except, I call it BE (bovine excrement--the bots will let you type those words)

If you are taking online tests and believing the results mean anything, there is compelling evidence that you are not gifted.
I'm not saying that you are not gifted. I don't know. But, I am pointing out that you keep offering pretty compelling negative evidence.

I will have to commit suicide if it turns out that I'm not at least gifted. Seriously. I can't stand losing to anyone anymore. It is doubtful that those kids whom I lost to in those competitions in high school have higher IQs than me. They were in the gifted program while I was not, but I don't believe I was ever tested in elementary school and middle school. I was tested in high school, but I didn't get in most likely because of the mediocre recommendation letter by one of the most hateful people I came to know. The online IQ tests may or may not accurately measure my intelligence, but what makes you think so? A "real" IQ test can't be any different.Â
So you already took an IQ test...
Â
Why don't you ask for the results instead of speculating and doing useless online IQ tests?

Sounds like your progress in chess is over, then. I had to lose THOUSANDS of games (literally, thousands) before I broke 1800 OTB rating. After that, progress was a bit faster.
A brittle personality cannot reach the top. Mental and emotional resilience counts for a lot. You need to have the ability to fall flat on your face, pick yourself up, and keep pushing forward.
Winston Churchill said "The key to success is the ability to go from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm".
He was right.
I enjoy difficult problems... not that I'm necessarily any good at them, but it's always more fun when you figure out something difficult vs something easy.
Certain IQ tests may have some extremely hard questions, but somehow I doubt any harder than various frontiers in science and math.
If a person is fascinated with hard problems, I hope they can find a way to get into research. IQ questions can be answered in a day, and don't really benefit anyone, but problems solved in science/math can benefit society, and may take a whole career (or more) to solve. Doesn't that sound more exciting than an IQ test?
Sure, but a high IQ is needed to contribute to humanity in science.
I mean... kinda.
You can be pretty average and still help. The thing about average is most people are there, so it only takes a little more work or a little more intelligence to be more useful than most people, even if you're average.
You're not going to contribute like Newton, but you can still help.
