GUNS

Have any of you guys ever had to fire your weapon outside of the context of competition, target practice, hunting etc? So for self defence purposes I guess I'm asking.

I'm quite thankful I live in a country with a limited number of animals which could kill me.

Further questions if I may as gun ownership is largely alien to me and my home nation...where do you keep your weapons? I would imagine if you have young kids in your home you want it to be somewhere completely inaccessible to them, but how do you balance that with potentially needing quick access in the worst case scenario of an intruder in your home?

Fair enough, so mostly about educating and familiarising youngsters then...you keep most of your guns in a safe for security reasons then, to prevent theft?

I have AR-15, but it is for hunting.

Nice! And did you build it your own?

As a matter of fact, I have never met one that would ever fire on another human being with their firearms except: in the DEFENSE, of their own life, or in defense of the life of another person.

Thanks for your posts.  Lots to talk about.  This one, even though I cannot say the same, I wholeheartedly agree on the safety of firearms.  I can say, the ones I keep in my circle are extremely safe.

I ran a gunsmith shop for 20 years, reloaded ammo on a production scale, cast bullets, I have a pistol range, and a rifle range. At one point I fired 5,000 rounds per week in practice and competition.

What would you like to discuss?

I'd like to discuss all of that.  The bullets, what guns you used and what ones you enjoyed better.

Good and thoughtful questions. At the moment, all my firearms are so locked away I couldn't get to one in a timely manner. If I did have them more accessible any loaded firearm would be in my possession, not off in a drawer somewhere. Every responsible gun owner believes the mantra "Safety First!".

I'm not much of a hand gun person but I have some long guns. I have a number of old US military shoulder arms dating from around 1888 up through the 1940s, including a civilian version of the 1941 Johnson. The newer stuff doesn't interest me and the triggers on the AR-15s and clones are usually so bad I hate to shoot them.

Guns are owned by the law-abiding for survival and/or sport.

Hunting used to be the primary way of securing meat.  For some, it still is.

Self-defense is always a good reason to be armed.

Guns are also owned by non law-abiding.   Ya know?

Never a good argument to say we only have them to stop them. It was once said by a very wise teacher:

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Yea,  I never liked that argument either.  Thing is though, both quotes are true.

There are differences in those quotes so there is no comparing between the two.

Always wanted to reload, especially back in the old days when I used to shoot practical pistol, major category.  Certainly went through a lot of 45 in those days.  We still have a local range where we go to shoot rifles and handguns periodically, but there is no real close place where I can tactically shoot steel and paper with my handguns.

So no real close place?  Why not?  Not rural enough for a safe range?

My split times were .1. I could cycle a 1911, 600 rounds per minute. Quick draws were in the .2’s, but drawing from hands at sides or wrists above shoulders was around .6 seconds.

Hand guns right?

Anything with semi autos?  Tried bumping?

My dad inherited from his father, my grandfather, an authentic late-1700s/early-1800s Kentucky long rifle.  I have never shot it.  It is just on display now.

If you have a pic, throw it up here!  💯💯💯💯💯💯

The range we go to does not allow any rapid fire and will warn you if the believe you are shooting too fast....yeah, I know, it is ridiculous.

Growing up, my dad always kept his glock in the top dresser in his room.  Later on in life I found out he had about a half dozen more, but I never knew where they were.  He's a retired detective so I guess that glock in his dresser was for easy access, also because it was like a belt.  He wore it every day.

Pat: Yes. Until 1996 I competed with a .45 shooting 200g semi wadcutters at a 180pf, then ran a Glock 35 for a few years. It was my duty weapon so I figured I might as well compete with it. I switched to the .22 division when ammo became impossible to find. I used to reload for $45.00 per 1,000rds, and I would buy components for 50,000-100,000 rounds at a time.

45$ for a thousand rounds??   In the store they are basically forty bucks for forty rounds.
