Have you heard of the word "than"

It annoys me how stupid some people can be.

I can understand making a mistake once or twice, but MORE THAN HALF of the time when the word "than" is appropriate, people feel the need to use the word "then" instead.

Let me explain to you the difference between then and than:

Then is used in a series of events. Something has to have happened after something else. For example:

I am going to brush my teeth then go to bed.

If you hit 2500 rating then you can become a grandmaster.

Than is used when comparing two or more things together. The sentence will consist of a comparative word, usually straight before the word "than". These words can include: happier, sadder, angrier, better, worse, slower, faster etc. For example:

I like ice-cream more than brussel sprouts.

Kasparov had a higher rating than Anand.

Now let me give you a sentence which uses both:

If you want to be happier than you are now, then you should do something that you enjoy, rather than doing something that you think is boring.

See if you can complete this sentence by yourself:

If I play chess for 4 hours per day, ____ I will soon become better ____ my friend, but if I don't, ____ my friend will remain better ____ I am now.

I hope that you can all learn from this valuable lesson.

One thing that seems to be annoying me for some reason, is people who use "that" incorrectly when they should use "who" or "whom."  Like, for instance, saying, "I know a guy that plays chess."  You use "that" when referring to objects or places, and use "who" or "whom" when referring to people.  So the correct statement would be "I know a guy who plays chess."  You wouldn't say, "The chess set whom I bought," so why would you call a person "that?"

I don't know why it annoys me, but it does.  Maybe I need to drink more.
