High school: A (mostly) complete waste of time, and crippling to my mental health.

In this post, I’ll be sharing what I think the school system does poorly, and explaining my thoughts on school and how it affects me. This will be a long post, but it’s not too late to go to another thread!

Since about seventh grade, when school became more focused on learning and education instead of constant socializing, and was pretty fun, I have HATED school. And it is getting worse with age. But I’ll get to that later.

School nowadays is completely inconvenient. The modern school system was based almost completely on the Second Industrial Revolution, where students went to school to become literate and obedient workers so that the government could thrive off the money these workers could make. And for well over 100 years, the school system has merely changed. Students still sit in their chairs for 8 hours per day learning useless information, waiting for each bell to dismiss them to their next class. Each day is a loop of a tiring day of learning the same unneeded information every single day, 5 days a week, for 180 days in a year. Oh, and factor in the 30 minutes to two hours of homework you’ll have after each day of school, and count the projects you’ll have to complete on your own time. The catch? 4 years of the most useless learning you’ll ever have will determine your entire future. For kids who wish to go to college later on in their life, they’re forced to grind out four entire years, take difficult (Maybe not always) AP classes, get all A’s, and spend countless hours studying and doing schoolwork to make sure that they keep up in all of their core classes. The way kids are forced to learn and the material we learn are completely outdated and useless. I don’t disagree with education at all, since I think it’s a great thing to have a generation of educated individuals, but starting in high school especially, we’ve learned all of the basix needed for adulthood. But after that, we have to learn algebra, the same biology, and some sort of fine art to cap everything off. There is a 4-year period that rewards people who memorize things for tests to get good grades, and leaves those with a creative outlook and high emotional intelligence out to dry. Kids’ creativity is being stripped away from them without any realization, since school teaches obedience and teaches you to think inside a box instead of outside of it. There are very few people like me who truly hate school and the entire system. There are actually plenty of people who like it. The only thing I think is a positive part of public high school is the good chance to socialize with other kids your age, and to participate in clubs, sports, and other activities. There’s usually something for everyone, which is good.

TLDR: The school system is outdated, and learning the way we do now is inconvenient and doesn’t benefit students. We’re learning useless information daily that we’ll never need to know again after the test, but these tests and learning pointless topics determine our future and college opportunities. Being forced to sit in a chair all day for 8 hours per day and having homework after each day is barbaric, and shouldn’t be the way we teach our generation and prepare them for adulthood.

That was half of my post. I knowww, but you guys are doing great. I’ll now be sharing my experiences throughout my years of school, and how my first full week was, and demonstrate how my above paragraph applies to me, a high school student.

My first week of school is over, and this is going to be another year of struggling to get through each day without losing my mind. My classes consist of chemistry, English, Spanish, algebra, business, and history. Each class period I walk into, I dread the 50 minutes of whatever I have to do. Every time I try to talk with a friend or something, I’m shut down, and I just decide to check out and stare at a wall or put my head down for the period. The same cycle repeats until I get to lunch, chop it up with my friends for an hour or so, and then finish up the day. This year is the first year that I’ve lost all motivation by the end of the first week. My grades are perfectly fine (A’s and B’s, if you’re wondering), the the school building and system don’t work for me. By the end of the day, I’m tired and never want to do anything but talk on OTF and relax. And the same constant cycle of having to listen in on lessons and useless information for 8 hours a day repeats, 5 days a week, 36 weeks, and 13 years. I have three years left, and I cannot wait to move on to college or whatever else I choose to pursue in my life. I’m simply tired of school and all of the homework that goes along with it. Luckily for me, I’m not like most people, and don’t think that school is the most important thing in my life. I focus on enjoying myself outside of school and making meaningful relationships with people inside and outside of school. Simply put, school is too tiring and mind-numbing for people like me. I’m a very happy person, but school puts me into a surprisingly negative state of mind. Over time, I’ve started to realize that I have some type of issue with school, whether mental health-related or something else. Either way, I hate going more than anything.

Well, that’s all. I hope you enjoyed my rant, and what I disagree with about the school system. Feel free to disagree and post your thoughts about my post below. Enjoy your day today, and slay the day away!

And of course…

Keek!

*Updating.

Maybe they should add a little more grammar to the curriculums…

I can't imagine another way of doing it though but maybe I'm brainwashed.

#3 Updating feels wrong in that context.

Well, I’ve thought through a system in my head. What if we went to school through eighth grade (since you are actually learning some useful things up until then), and got to choose what you want to learn in high school, if anything. Since I’m into psychology and how people think and interact, I could learn about psychology to further benefit my future and enjoy learning. People who wanted to learn about business, astrology, or whatever else could do so as well. For the few people who don’t care about their future, they could get jobs and work, since they’ll be old enough to.

#6 PE should still be mandatory no matter the elective High School education you choose though.

I agree. Exercise is important, and should be mandatory to an extent. If the school system was done correctly, kids could learn more than what they need to in half the time we do it in now.

Well I dont know the american school system, but here in Italy we have many types of hightschool, so u can study what interest u most.

Anyway I think that 8th grade is too early to take a decision that will sign your life

Avatar of BasixWhiteBoy
It’s certainly too early to choose what path to take in your adult life, but not too early to realize what interests you.

The Italian school system sounds great. I was describing how it is here in America. So, do you guys still have to do math, reading, and stuff like that?

Reading is a good skill to have.

Read the whole post;

1. I found this as a guide as I’m going to start high school so thanks!

2. I completely agree, school is boring and tries too much to put the useless information in your brain in such a boring way. School has to be interesting, in a way that it’s not Chinese torture to learn something for a test and then after the test you forget everything. Those grades from the tests don’t mean how smart you were, they mean how good you remembered the information (in my opinion). It’s also stressful to pull an all nighter just for that test, scared to fail because in a few years you won’t get to a good college and won’t succeed in life.

Well, at the end of 8th grade you can choose between high school, a technical institute, or a vocational school. In high school, the theoretical component is more important than the practical one, and vice versa in a vocational institute. A technical institute is the middle ground. If you choose a vocational institute, you'll likely start working after graduation, while if you choose a secondary school, you'll definitely have to attend university. These three paths are further divided into different types: for example, there are scientific high schools, art high schools, or high schools specializing in humanities (psychology). Vocational institutes are a bit more specific; for example, you could study in the hotel/restaurant industry or carpentry.

Yea
I’m taking few high school courses rn, and they are boring as heck. Most of it is useless (for instance, why do I need to memorize geometry? Maybe 1 in every 10,000 could find it useful. Just put it in college)

breh we have four hours each day hw

in singapore we have a major exam in 6th grade which will determine where u go next for ur education. there are good schools and mid schools, idt any schools are bad. but it puts WAY too much stress on 12 year olds because to some extent the results of this exam determine what the rest of your life may look like. like when i got my marks, i was so freaking sad bcs i didnt do that well. and then i got my 4th choice of school in the end. i was even sadder. 12 is too young for stuff like that.
