I like to believe chess makes me smarter than most people =P. I have defeated everyone that has challenged me in college, again not saying much, but neither does my college =/, lol, =D.

I don't believe in doing things unless they are worth doing, so its a good mental exercise, again the puzzles are the best thing I like about this site.

Chess makes you a better person by letting you meet new people and using tactics to KICK THEIR ASS!!

Chess makes me a better person by enabling me to quiet my mind and focus.  No matter what kind of day im having, chess is there to get my busy mind off of the often mundane trials of life. Its meditative. Now that I have moved from California to Oregon, I find that chess fills the void that has been in me since surfing is on the shelf for awhile. I forget the world, and focus on the game.To me, whoever I may be playing against, the true opponent is myself.Im using my knowlege to the best of my ability, and if I fail, it is my fault. Its spiritual to me(not in a religous sense)in a sense of the rewards of clarity of mind, stopping internal dialouges and focusing.I realize that you can learn about yourself, or others through playing.Ive learned that people often play how they live. If they are patient or impatient, easygoing or rigid, bold or timid, arrogant or humble, organized or messy,it can show in thier play. The constant challenges keep me from fearing the next one, and enmbolden me to find a solution. This carries over into my daily life. Ive learned that solutions are out there if you can calm down enough to see them.

Heh, sounds like a homework assignment from high school... or perhaps a question in an interview xD "How does x make you a better person?"

I use the game as a exercise to keep my mind active and as a source of meditation when I am stressed (from school).

Chess can't make you smarter. It's a game that reflects the hard work, study and playtime that you have put into it. Chess is a reflection of how smart you are, not how smart chess is.

study!? Gardner (1983) Stanford psychologist says that there are 7 basic intelligences, Goleman (1995,2006) says Emotional Intelligence is the most important in day to day human experiences. A person with 160 iq can work for a man with 100 iq and get paid less, mostly due to higher values in the other intelligences, in this case interpersonal skills.

College, and I was just wondering =D

It helps out married men tremendously, because when we are arguing with our wives, it helps us think three or four responses ahead, so we will know what to say. Tongue out
