I'm sure this is a school exercise but it's calculated like that:

n*(n-1)/2

In this case it's 9*8/2 which equals 36.

This is simply the binomial coefficient

If 3 people would be involved in a handshake, it would be calculated like that:

n*(n-1)*(n-2)/3!

"!" refers to faculty and if we look at n! it would be written as n * (n-1) * (n-2) ... * 2 * 1. So 3! would refer to 3 * 2 * 1, which equals 6.

So the formula would be:

n*(n-1)*(n-2)/6
