I haven't either, but it definitely is real.

I felt it once. After that I decided to plug in vacuums the right way.

If you want to see electricity, its easy, just step outside during a thunderstorm.

he's not supposedly the most powerful man on earth

bigpoison

He's pretty close.  Right behind Spider Pope.

I think Bernanke is the most powerful man on earth. Think I'm wrong? See what happens if he ever stops giving the banks free money.

heister

Bernanke is out of office soon.  http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/5d45ed48-6834-11e3-a905-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2oUrqN7YL

Never acknowledge the presence of a troll.  Speak to the other members of the room as if the troll does not exist.  If they become a spammer troll, report the abuse so the account can be muted.

If you must address somebody flaming the chat, do so with the understanding that nothing you can say will make them stop, change to become a normal human being, or even leave.  The only action worth taking is to block them and report the abuse.

Just block the person who started the whole thing.

Regarding trolls who only maintain one account - they're easy to handle- if one is willing to block them.
To each his own way of handling same.
Though some would prefer to tolerate/ignore/be silent/X out of the chat -
when there's a big "flame war".
Another idea is temporary blocking.
If one is an admin then there's an option of temp/mute or temp/kick.

Regarding the type 1 trolls, (persons maintaining hundreds of accounts each) -
that's a very different animal.
Their preferred targets/weapons of choice:
1) newbies who are ignorant of their existence and nature
2) people who are easily inhibited or talked out of using their block options - and
3) divisiveness among members about exposing/blocking/muting/kicking and banning -
of that worst category of troll ...

Haven't thought of that...

The main issue about dealing with trolling - is to know about the trolls.
There is no "formula".
So I now want to post a "classification list" of the various troll types.
Its more like a list of personality types concerned though. Not necessarily trolls.
Why post? So that when people ask me what I mean by "Type 7 Troll" or "Type 5"-
or whatever - then I can refer them here - to see this list. And/or this chat.

Type 1) People who maintain many accounts at once. On the same site.
This will almost always be for trolling of various kinds. Viscious trolling.
One of the worst.

Type 2) Where there's a big chess rating - or chess title - or the personality concerned -
gets paid significantly for chess coaching.
There's a terrbile personality pattern of arrogance and contempt -
that often occurs among such persons. Bobby Fischer was one.
And GM arrogance and discourtesy is well known.

Type 3 Trolls. Individual isolated trolls. Infinite in variety.
But like Type 2 - easily blocked.
Unlike Type 1.

Type 4 People who give aid and comfort to the trolls. Intensely. Perniciously.
By taking the attitude: "Yes - the Emperor has no clothes -
but you're not supposed to say so. And don't use your block options"
There's nothing that helps the Type 1's and other trolls more than that.

Type 5) Refers to when a particular person is targetted by multiple trolls and trolling.
That target person could be a member - or admin - or staff. And its viscious.

Type 6) A person who is being paid by the same website - to enter conversations.
Whether chatrooms or forums. To troll whoever - in whatever way.
The website could use its own staff - disguised accounts - or outside people.
Sometimes - this is in a good purpose though. A kind of "immune system".

Type 7) When a competing website - or other outside organization - pays somebody -
to enter a different website's chatrooms and forums - to disrupt them.
Again - they could use their own people - or others. Including "specialists".
And this form of trolling is particularly viscious. And very very determined.

Type 8) People who do 'operations' trolling.
For example they PM others and ask them not to post or read forums of people they don't like.
Or ask them to not join or to leave clubs owned or run by people they want to step on.
They even say: 'If you join that club or if you talk to that person I won't talk to you anymore and I'll ban you from my clubs'.
Its essentially internet blackmail and it goes on quite a lot.
Suggestion: don't let anybody bully you in that way.
Plus expose people who do that.
Plus - don't let anybody take away your blocking options.
