There's never been a staff answer that I'm aware of.
The Non-Staff answer is (though "staff" will never publicly admit it), points were removed *publicly* because of the propensity for people spamming Forum threads in order to get cheap points towards Achievements. Points still exist; they're just kept out of sight.
