I wonder if..

I never say "GG." I think it's demeaning, uncommunicative, and worse than nothing. When I am soundly drubbed by a worthy opponent, I like to compose a missive, an epistle, a message. I couch it in somewhat antique terms, but I always credit the winner with, I hope, an amusing and self-effacing message.

This is, of course, in online play. In live play they've usually moved on before I even get a chance to write. However, when I do, I usually compose a short message with the penultimate move; that way I'm sure my opponent sees it.

Can vitamin B-12 improve memory in Alzheimer's disease?

Answers from Glenn Smith, Ph.D.

Vitamin B-12 helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells. A vitamin B-12 deficiency — most common in older adults and vegetarians — can cause various signs and symptoms, including memory loss. In such cases, vitamin B-12 supplements can help improve memory.

In the absence of a vitamin B-12 deficiency, there's no evidence that vitamin B-12 supplements enhance memory for people who have Alzheimer's disease. Still, vitamin B-12 remains an important part of a healthy diet.

Vitamin B-12 is found naturally in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat and poultry. Many breakfast cereals are fortified with vitamin B-12 as well. If you're concerned that you're not getting enough vitamin B-12 or other specific nutrients, consult your doctor — especially if you're an older adult or a vegetarian.

Wonder no longer:

Alzheimer Society Canada

Long-term care

Depending upon where you live, short-term (respite) and permanent housing options may include supportive living, group homes, retirement residences or long-term care homes. Your local Alzheimer Society will have information on the services available in your area. In making your decision, try to remain flexible and keep in mind the needs of the person you're caring for.

When looking at caregiving options, remember that there are no right or wrong choices. For some, the decision will be to continue providing care at home or in the community. For others, the choice will be made to arrange for care provided in a long-term care facility.

Learning more about the disease and being able to talk about your feelings can often help to clarify your decision. The person with dementia will eventually require full-time caregiving and you can't do it alone. Your friends, family or an Alzheimer support group of caregivers can be especially important during this time.

If you decide to continue caregiving at home, it will be important to know about the support services available. In-home respite services, a home-care worker or visiting nurse can provide you with relief from caregiving tasks. At the same time, you might wish to consider enlisting additional support for day-to-day chores such as housekeeping, laundry and home maintenance. The Alzheimer Society can inform you of the available services in your area.

If you decide to arrange for care in a long-term care facility, there are a number of things you can do to make this decision easier — both for you and for the person with the disease.

Please consider sharing this info with your family ---
