Hello peeps! My friend recently told me this riddle, and I was stumped, until I found the answer half an hour later. So I decided to share this riddle with everyone! Mike and Sally are siblings. Mike has the same amount of brothers as sisters. Sally has twice as many sisters as brothers. How many female members are in their family? Stumped? If you are, don't worry, I completely understand and agree. However, if you find the answer, and comment down below the right answer, you deserve a HUGE award for smart thinking:) Good luck!

Mike’s f:m sibling ratio is 1:1
Sally’s f:m sibling ratio is 2:1

(1) m - 1 = f
(2) f - 1 = 2m

Substitute f = m -1 into (1)

(m - 1) - 1 = 2m
m - 2 = 2m
m = -2

Substitute m = -2 into (1)

-2 - 1 = f = -3

There are -3 female members out of all of the siblings.

Typo: the second substitution should say “into (2).” I cant edit on my phone.

I got the same thing, that doesn't make sense though. Are you sure you worded the question correctly? I looked it up online and found a similar riddle: https://www.brainbashers.com/showpuzzles.asp?puzzle=ZHNZ. The way it was phrased was:

Daniel has the same number of brothers as sisters.

His sister, Laura, has twice as many brothers as she has sisters.

How many boys and girls are in the family?

From that you get, where B and S are the total number of brothers and sisters:

B - 1 = S

B = 2(S - 1)

--> B = 2(B - 2) = 2B - 4 --> B = 4, S = 3.

This makes sense.
