It seems that the zone in your brain that is activated the most when playing chess is the same zone that you use when you imagine that you are a pigeon flying above a forest looking for home... Am not sure whether this is good or bad news.

Yes, but was the pigeon playing chess?

All right, Class, let's all take a close look at this drawing.  Remember that Dr.Spudnik has played a Lot of Chess.  But just now he was able to draw this Fine picture of a Bird!  Now who can figure out what that tells us about chess being "bad for your brain?"

Anyone? ... Anyone? .....Beuler? .....

Chess makes you lift pictures of birdies off google, that's how bad it is for your brain.

Oh, what a relief to find That out!  I was just being "nice" before about your picture -- to tell you the truth, that is a Terrible drawing of a bird! ... hey, the fact that you Chose this Particular hideous drawing out of all the available possibilities -- what does That say about your brain?  .... boy, this whole issue is so incredibly complex ... n'est pas?

It's the quality of the endgame play that matters, not the quality of the rendering.

Excellent point.  If the bird plays a good endgame who cares what he looks like?  It's not the Bathing Suit competition, it's the Talent contest that matters!  I stand corrected.

But if your brain is already damaged/minced. What then? Chess may intensify that??

Motorcycle day trips and swing dancing are better therapy. Chess can stimulate but also aggravate. It's the sharpest of all double-edged swords.

Like I always say:  "Live by the double-edged sword, die by -- or be aggravated by -- the double-edged sword!"
