Is downloaded material that we publish on this site in breach of copyright?

It is common practice to publish items and photographs either on this site or other sites, how do we know whether or not there is a copyright over that material.  If there is, then we may run the risk of being sued.  Agree or disagree?

Yes, the whole internet is about to be closed for that very reason.

I think we are pretty good about not letting content like in-copyright books stay up here.

If you have seen examples here of content which should be removed, let the staff know.

No one has control over the internet, it will always be with us.  I understand the owners of a site can remove material that has been seen to violate copyright.  Unless the owner of any material proves there has been a copyright violation of their property I don't imagine there would be any problems with publishing such material.  It's customery to approach any individual who has work you wish to publish yourself, for their permission to do so.  Otherwise it's a good idea to check and see if a copyright does exist over the subject matter, before using it on any site. Of course finding the owner of any material we come across on a site is not always going to be easy. It seems the whole subject of copyright is a large gray area.
