Is free will real, or are our lives predetermined by factors beyond our control?

what is everyone’s opinion on the question?

i reckon free will isnt real.. considering the multiverse exists then things are predetermined just by that.. everything that has or will happen has been played out. i believe time perception is caused by the brain itself..
iamveryverygoodatchess5

i agree

ThePersonAboveYou

Quantum mechanics makes things being predetermined a little complicated, but for the most part you feel like you have free will when you dont. Its negative to think this way though because you'll just get lazy and not think even though the brain is pre determined in ways wayyy beyond what we can ever predict

iamveryverygoodatchess5

but it doesnt matter if you are lazy because your life is scripted and you have no control over it

QueenNinja35

I think some things are going to happen no matter what, but you do have agency.

Free will

wrong

Muffin_Soul

I think our lives are predetermined in the sense that all that happens to us is a consequence of the past and of our surroundings, which have nothing to do with us and which we can’t control.

And it’s technically impossible to do something we weren’t going to end up doing, so in that way we have no real free will, even though we make decisions — or at least, we think we do.

If free will exists, it must be extremely limited.

Just my opinion, though.

iamveryverygoodatchess5

i dont think it exists at all

Muffin_Soul

But I mean, if we believe that every action is predetermined, doesn’t that technically justify atrocities with “it couldn’t have been otherwise”? And the legal system is based on the existence of free will. We punish people for their actions because they could’ve not done them.

So free will should exist. Life is impacted fundamentally by factors beyond our control, but we still have degrees of control.

Imo it doesnt, in theory you could predict everything that will happen based on events in real world, everything happens for a reason.

I’d say free will doesn’t exist, mostly. Our choices are usually made not by us, but by external forces like society. We may seem to have agency, but considering the number of people who’s actions are predicted and controlled by algorithms, I don’t think most people have free will, for the most part.
