Your profile picture is a message to your opponents.

Some people choose an attractive picture. Some choose something funny. Some choose something that intends to intimate or annoy others. Showing one's own face is a message of openness, I would say - something like "hi, I'm here, I'm a real, living person".

Nobody will check if it is your real face, though if you have a facial portrait of a person that is not a celebrity or a known chessmaster, most people will probably assume that it's you. With a manga character, people are less inclined to assume that it's you.

I personally don't mind if my opponents have their real faces or an anime character or a picture of the chessmaster they admire, or a picture of an animal, or whatever. The only profiles that I feel a strange aversion at are those who have no picture of any kind, and whose username is also a series of numbers or something alike. With such profiles, I feel like playing with a machine.

Funny, some time ago I accidentally encountered a player here who had exactly the same picture of a Viking warrior that I have on my profile. It felt a bit like playing against myself. But we both had just found the same pic in the internet.
