JennyVoyeurGirl, a deer and a disgusting video

Warning  - post contains words and lots of them.

As someone who has in the past created some content for the internet I get used to people expressing their opinions about that content. One should of course welcome criticism if its well intentioned and constructive.  All to often however one is subjected to people pandering their opinion as if it has some kind of efficacy in itself. e.g your content sucks.  Suck the content may well do but unless an opinion is substantiated with reason it is practically meaningless.

This brings us to JennyVoyeurGirl who did just that. She left some unsubstantiated opinions on my page.  When I asked her politely to desist from doing so in the future she retorted that it was not meaningless and that the video was disgusting and in her opinion trash again falling into the vain practice of proffering her opinion as if it has some kind of efficacy in itself.  Her rationale was that the video was a real 'turn off', for her.  Why she thinks this is some kind of substantiation I cannot say and why she would think others might take it as valid I also cannot say.  In predictable fashion she immediately blocked me after which I was rather relieved for it confirmed my suspicions that she was not interested in reason simply taking cheap shots.

But to the video itself.  Its a stop motion video of a deer that gets killed and a car chase.  Will someone please inform JennyVoyeurGirl that NO actual deer died.  The deer was made of putty.  The cars, the trees, the road, the gunfire, the oil slick , none of it was real.  It was the killing of a plasticine deer that JennyVoyeurGirl termed disgusting, trash etc.

We have of course in our culture a fine tradition of fantasy characters getting maimed, run over, shot, thrown from cliffs, blown to bits by ACME rockets.  Does JennyVoyeurGirl also find The Roadrunner disgusting and trash? What about Tom and Jerry? Is that a real turn off?

A much more interesting question is why we find these types of depictions of violence humorous and we do, or at least I do. Why I cannot say.

Is this disgusting? trash? Is Jenny correct? Why do we find the depiction of fantasy violence humorous?  Please let all things be known.

Well if this "turned her off", she would not do well in a country where hunting is a way of life. I've seen zebra, hunted with bows, not to mention rifles.

Hi Jenny there is no need to apologise.

I personally was not offended, did not block you and fully recognise your right to express your thoughts. What I would like you to do though is to think about why an opinion without corroboration may have little meaning beyond that which its originator imbues it with.  In other words while it may have meaning for you it may not have for its intended recipient unless of course accompanied by some corroborating element.  Its not enough to say, 'I think this sucks' you must provide validation, e.g. 'this video sucks because it depicts gratuitous violence against animals even though its in fantasy form.'

I myself am a vegetarian and have been for many years.  I do not eat meat because I have a physical aversion to it, it literally makes me physically sick.  Meat, poultry, fish and eggs all make me sick.  I also gave up fishing because it appeared to me to be cruel.  I am against all blood sports.  I do however recognise the difference between fantasy and reality although I am not so sure if there is any moral difference in the depiction of violence for entertainment sake, perhaps it really is a very poor choice, I dunno.

Easy there JennyVoyeurGirl, no one is aligned with killing.  Please lets calm down and let logic and reason guide our thoughts.

a Stupid discussion  - JVG

what would you say was a fit topic for discussion Jenny and we can discuss that instead?

Its unfortunate that we shut people out who may infact be putting before us a different perspective, one that we have not considered.  We are in danger of creating an echo chamber for ourselves.

I thought Endgame Study was the driver who killed the deer.

Alas Endgame Study was here but for a fleeting moment RJC!  He left messages for his friends on his departure after having received a premonition of it.  A most interesting fellow.

Actually cottonsocks I had a kind of epiphany.

I took my kids camping into the wilderness beside a little river near my home.  We built a fire, cooked and fished.  We caught a little golden brown trout.  On reeling him in I noticed that the hook had lodged itself fairly deep down and with some difficulty I managed to extract it.  You can imagine how traumatised the little fish must have been. When we returned him to the water he turned belly up.  My kids asked me what was wrong with him.  What to say?  I entered the water and held him upright until he got his bearings and then he thankfully scooted away,  It then came like an epiphany! What had I contributed to that magical little scene, the river, the sunshine, the mountain? Nothing but almost killing a little golden fish. There was no necessity for it nor any rationality that I could find that could justify it.

I forget which philosopher said it, but its the beginning of spirituality when we become conscious of inflicting pain on other living things.

Unfortunatly, in Africa killing is 'a way of life ' not only of defencless animals but of the human race too!!

I gave up fishing long ago because I thought it cruel, I am an animal lover and don't like hunting in any form.

Ian.

Yeah game was awesome. As for the difference between fantasy and reality in some countries you can be prosecuted for the depiction of fantasy depending on its nature. I think there was a New York policeman who was initially convicted for depicting extreme fantasy in some chat room but later had his conviction quashed because he was able to prove that he had no intent and no means to actually carry out this fantasy regardless of its extreme grotesqueness. The idea that you can be prosecuted for fantasy I find fascinating. Its kind of like a thought crime.
