If you want to read a great trilogy on Arthur based on what little is known, read Bernard Cornwells *Warlord Chronicals*. Awsome historical fiction that ends with what historical facts are known and debated amongst historians.

If I remember correctly it was excaliber that Arthur took from the stone.  Arthur then lost and broke it as a result of his foolish pride, but it was  returned to him by the Lady of the Lake.

Arthur was fatally wounded fighting against Modred at the battle of Badon Hill and Sir Gerwain  was instructed by Arthur to cast the sword back into the lake.  Gerwain hoping to keep the sword lied twice and was sent back again until he told the truth, that the Lady of the Lake rose to receive it when finally threw it in.  Once Arthur was told this he died and was taken to the magical  Isle of  Avalon to the west of Britain.

Yeah I know bout Sir Wazzizname but wasn't the sword in the stone completely different?

I believe Caliburn was the name of the sword in the stone, he somehow lost it. Excalibur was the sword whose sheath was supposed to protect him from injuries in battle, and this he got from the Lady of the Lake.

Exactly!!@!!

Caliburn and Excalbur are alternative names.  Caledfwlch predated them both as being the orignal Arthurian sword.
