Learning Guitar

Well, the OP is staff, so he should still be here. I hate to take over a thread, but some guitar tips on here couldn't hurt. We've been doing a bunch of music threads.

I agree with the buy a good guitar as opposed to a cheapo. We learned on cheepos because that was all we had. You have to be dedicated, but one thing it does is strengthen your fingers as you press that big bass string down half an inch. The Rickenbacker you barely have to touch the fret and you have the note. It makes it one of the fastest basses to play. Once I started playing "real" guitars it was very easy. Buying a guitar which is hard to play can discourage anyone.

The good news is that there are plenty of decent guitars for around $200 or less. Washburn is a decent guitar and around the bottom of the decent guitars. I played one in the streets for years and it held up well and they sound good. Guild are equal to Martins. I don't know where the comment about them being cheap came from. Guild does not make a cheap guitar. I chose mine over the Martin, and they're about the same price.

The Fender Squire is one of the best deals in electric guitars. They were only around $200 last I checked.

The reason everyone plays Precision basses is because they hold up over the years. Cheap guitars will eventually become "ski-jump" guitars. 60 year old Precisions are still in just as good a shape now as ever. Another reason to invest in a good guitar. Old Precisions can go for a few thousand dollars.

Buy the best guitar you can afford.

Practice, Practice, Practice! Attack! Attack! Attack!
