The controversy surrounding people in drag doing readings for children is starting to get nastier, according to this BBC report:
‘For the first time ever, I worry about doing drag gigs’ - BBC Three
Grim.
I agree, and this was already covered in law prior to the recent backlash and controversy. But totally innocent drag entertainments with children are being restricted, and totally innocent drag performers subjected to harassment, discrimination and threats/violence. Not to mention the parents and children at such events.
The big issues here seems to me to be that some people believe all drag is inherently sexualised, and some people are using parental fear as a way to push homophobia and transphobia.
How do you justify the claim that cross-dressing (drag) is a sexual act in and of itself?
This is an interesting topic, but I suspect this isn't the thread for it as this thread is pretty much a pro-lgbtq+ space. I'm not sure that such a discussion is best held here. I will start another separate thread.
I'll start another thread, but just to say here that if drag isn't inherently sexual then you've basically contradicted yourself. And if non-sexual drag acts (new or not) are being targeted under the false presumption that drag is inherently sexual then that is an obvious case of at best ignorance and at worst deliberate discrimination. Additionally, non-sexual cross dressing has been used in entertainment like theatre and pantomimes for hundreds of years, so your claim of 'all it's been used for' is false.
If a gender non-conforming male teacher wearing eyeliner and a blouse delivers a lecture on geology, is that inherently sexual simply because of the xdressing? Obviously not. So I don't see any logical cohesion in your stance. Maybe you can expand on the new thread.
Drag readings in libraries, the very issue under discussion, are non-sexual drag acts. Or, to be more precise, non-sexual acts performed by people in drag.
Not a lot ![]()
If you want to discuss the issues surrounding the marked increase in homophobic/transphobic violence, harassment and legal discrimination connected to the controversial drag stroyhour programmes from a pro-lgbtq+ perspective then to some extent this is the thread.
If you want to discuss the tangential issue as to whether drag/xdressing is itself inherently sexual, there's a separate thread for that.
If you want to discuss the uptick in homophobic harassment connectd to drag book readings for children from an anti-lgbtq+ perspective, then it's best to start a separate thread.
Does anyone know of any accepting lgbtq+ chess.com clubs
