I have outlook! It's handy, I have a gmail for google stuff and a yahoo for a yahoo group. But outlook is my main one.

No gmail doesn't need a phone # to make an account, they just want your number for adds :P
gmail does have a chatting thing but I wouldn't use it
I would go with outlook.
