Nothing like a little bigotry veiled in poor articulation. Great job tootravel, really riding the cusp of indecency with this one.
Nowadays many people don't listen to religious reasons anymore in western countries, so the resource of appeal to biological ones seems mandatory. But what is solely between a man and a woman is reproduction, not sex or partnership. Reproduction based on sex evolved as a succesful mean to enlarge range of variation, but the most succesful group of living beings (bacteria) usually don't rely on it. Besides, as usual, this particular feature (sex) soon went beyond its original purpose (if we can talk about "purposes" in evolution), since we are luck enough to live in such a complicated world. Sex is about fun, and therefore only a matter of taste.
And about marriage, obviously is not necessary for reproduction, what is the business of evolution after all. Could have been favoured in particular environments, but again it goes beyond that later. It's about having a partner. Maybe religion does, but biology doesn't give a heck about human customs.
Pulpofeira:
Appreciate your comments. But your evolutionary morals:
"Sex is about fun, and therefore only a matter of taste." and
"what is solely between a man and a woman is reproduction, not sex or partnership."
A society of free sex anyway you like it!
A recipe for a sick society
Evolution is amoral. Sure not the best guide for behaviour. I don't think is a good idea to mix those things.
What about the biological arguement?
You're confusing procreation (which does not even require that a couple be married) with marriage (a legally binding oral contract). Until recently marriage licenses were issued only to male and female couples because that's the way the populace thought it should be. That's changed. Maybe the contract between same sex couples should have a different name, but that isn't the way the laws were written.
'According to nature'? I didn't know that nature invented marriage. I thought it was wealthy men in order to know who were their own children; who should inherit their property. The word 'Family' came to us in the West via the Romans I think and their idea of family meant property, including 'their wife' and 'their children'. Ownership.
What consenting adults do is up to them. If people of the same sex love each other then what has it to do with anyone else? Live and let live. As for 'gods creation' then there's not a shred of evidence in the whole of human history. However, if believing in a god makes you happy then fine, just as not believing in a god makes me happy.

Firstplay
The British started it all. The 1753 "Marriage Act" required that all marriage ceremonies be performed by a parish minister in a church or chapel of the Church of England.
Actually, marriage can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks where it was pretty much an economic and political alliance vehicle.
Yes, the British are best at everything. That's why they beat Australia in rugby. Or am I remembering that wrong...? :P
The point I was making is that there's nothing 'natural' about marriage and homosexuality has been around for quite some time I think. The example of ancient Greece, especially Sparta, is a good one.
2travel...........This is the 21st century, but you still live in the 1920's. Marriage was invented for humans, by humans. They then invented divorce. Go figure.

Firstplay......I'm with you on that.
I can't stand religious control freaks. Just look around the world at all the problems that religions create.
You know two good buddy's that realize the tax benifits of marriage could decide to get married and then go out, have babes come over for a good time while swilling beer and groping them.
Now that is a legal sham.

Males and females can get married and do pretty much the same thing. That's why the divorce rate is so high.
