                                   Chapter 7

“So you mean to tell me that we’re all heroes, and this is just a big misunderstanding?” Constantine asked Ghost Rider. After asking Constantine and Spectre a few questions, Johnny Blaze (The Ghost Rider) had marched them over to Earth’s gateway and taken them to the other side. There, they met Johnny’s companion, an African-American man who had a passion for vampire hunting.

“Yeah, that seems to be the case.” Blade replied. “I was down in the Underworld hunting Morbius, and by the time I came back, there was talk of galactic war. Almost like everyone was brainwashed or something.”

A faint tingling came to Constantine’s head for a moment but quickly disappeared. “I don’t know if I can trust you. I mean, after all, both of you look like bad guys. No offense.”

“If we were bad guys, then I wouldn’t have saved you back there from the demons.” Johnny pointed out.

“Fair enough. Another question I have is, what are you going to do with us now?”

“Well, I don’t wanna force you into anything, but you can come along with us if you won’t attack us. Blade and I are looking for a thing called the Death Stone right now, and I think we know where it is.”

“I don’t know. Can you give me and Spectre a minute to think it over?” Johnny agreed readily, and he and Blade gave them space to talk.

They had discussed the idea for a few minutes, arguing first one side and then the other, but their thoughts were interrupted by a beeping coming from Constantine; Superman was attempting to contact them. Constantine quickly answered.

   “Yes, Clark?”

“I just wanted to check on you, see how things are going.” Clark’s voice answered. “Has your mission been a success so far?”

“Not exactly. We nearly got overrun by demons, but a flaming skeleton saved us. Now we’re with the skeleton and a friend of his that kills vampires.” “So goes the life of an exorcist,” he thought to himself.

“Do you know what intentions they have?”

“Well, they said they’re looking for something called the Death Stone. Supposed to be on Earth, I think.”

Silence from Clark for several moments. “Constantine, change of plan. I want you and Spectre to go with them, and help them retrieve the stone. Once they have it, I want you to kill them and bring the stone to me. Is that clear?”

“But I can’t just do that now! They saved our lives; it would be horrible if I was to murder them.”

“Constantine, this is war. You need to remember that. They are the enemy, and they are worthy of death.”

Constantine was about to argue back, but his brain suddenly became foggy, and he forgot just why he shouldn’t kill them. After all, they were the enemy. “You know what, Clark, you’re right. I need to keep the mission in mind. As soon as the Stone is in our possession, we strike.”

“Good. Report back when you can. Over and out.” Constantine quickly filled the details in to Spectre, who agreed on the plan. They went back to Ghost Rider and Blade, who seemed to be in an animated conversation.

“Hey, answer this for me, will ya?” Blade asked Constantine, turning to him. “Johnny here says that The Exorcist wasn’t a scary movie. You’re the expert here on exorcism, so would you agree with him?”

“Actually, I would have to agree with Johnny there. The stuff that happens in The Exorcist, happens to me at least once a week. I wasn’t scared at all by the movie.”

“See, I told you!” Johnny pointed out happily, and Blade just sat in silence, although it sounded like he was muttering “But it really was a scary movie…”

“So, John, Spectre,” Johnny continued, “Are you coming with us, or no?”

“We would be happy to come along.” Spectre replied. “Of course, if there’s an argument and we accidentally kill you, then it’s your fault for inviting us.”

Johnny laughed, not sensing that Spectre was completely serious. “Ok then, new friends. Welcome to our journey! The search begins!”

“My work is going well, I must say.” The mysterious figure said to his companion. “The riots have begun. Soon any opposition will cease, and Earth will be mine for the taking.”

“That is good news, indeed. This plan of ours is working quite well. I have even better news as well, from Knull. He says that the Death Stone has been located.”

“The Death Stone? What is it? It sounds powerful.”

“Yes, it is a formidable weapon, and in our hands it shall guide us to victory. Eons ago, Lady Death had grown to be one of the most feared deities of her day, taking the lives of millions across the universe. The other deities saw this and, believing that she needed to be kept in check, combined their powers to create the Death Stone. Rather than bring death, it reverses death. It can only be used three times, to bring back to life as many people as they wish. The catch, however, is that it kills the one who wields the Stone. A hard exchange, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s a small price to pay for salvation.”

“You said that it can be used only 3 times. Has it ever been used before?”

“Yes, twice. We do not know the individuals who sacrificed themselves, but the results were clearly felt. After the second time, the whereabouts of the Stone became unknown, and have remained that way since. That is, until now. The enemy has unwittingly given us an advantage.” He smiled at the thought.

“This all sounds good. I must leave now, to return to my universe. Someone needs to be there to control the chaos, right? Don’t worry, my universe will be taken care of within a week. Then I’ll return with my men to help you if you need it. Until then, goodbye.” With the flick of his wrist, he disappeared, leaving his companion alone.

“Are we ready to go look for those BEEEEP BEEEEPS yet?” Deadpool yelled at Stark the following morning. It had been a rather annoying night for Tony Stark, having to deal with one of the few superheroes that he couldn’t stand.

“Yeah, yeah, we’re ready!” he replied. “Gambit, Peter, stop playing pool and get over here! We need a plan of action.” When they all gathered, he addressed them. “Ok, here’s what I’m thinking. Peter, you’re the most approachable of us all. Mingle with the common folk, see if you can learn something helpful from them. Wade, cover the Northern areas, and Gambit the Eastern. I’ll take the Southern and Western parts. We should be able to cover the entire area that way. We’ll meet back here at noon to report and discuss our options. How does that sound?” Everyone agreed, and they split up again.

At the same time, in another city about 20 miles or so from Stark and Company, Superman was trying to explain his mysterious absence to the others.

“I was, well, doing important stuff. I was scouting out the area, seeing if I could find anything.”

“But it was nighttime.” Martian Manhunter pointed out.

“I couldn’t sleep last night, so I decided to look around.”

“Did you find anything at least?” Dr. Mid-Nite asked.

“Nope, nothing within 50 miles. Not even a village. You know, I think-” Clark was interrupted by the arrival of a young local, who immediately began speaking to him.

“I find your friends!” he exclaimed triumphantly. “I find your friends!”

   “Friends!” Clark exclaimed. “Where?”

“Over there!” the boy pointed to the east. “My family ride spaceship there and back. We see guys like you. Guys with powers.” The members of Team Superman glanced at each other.

“Can you be a bit more descriptive?” Supergirl asked politely.

“They were at a table. A boy, a guy with some cards, a grown-up with like red and yellow armor, and an ugly guy who used words like-” and he proceeded to speak several Deadpool-friendly words.

“Whoa, whoa, don’t say those words!” interjected Superboy.

“Anyway, thank you for your trouble, boy. Here’s a tip; tell your family to stay inside and not go back to the other town. Things could get a bit dangerous.” Superman advised the boy, who promptly ran off.

“So much for not spotting anything.” Phantom Stranger muttered.

“Alright, everyone, this could be our next step. Martian and Miss Martian, get the LabBots ready to go. Elongated Man, make sure all the civilians are safe. Supergirl and Superboy, scout ahead of us. Phantom Stranger, Shazam, and Dr. Mid-Nite, come with me. When you’ve completed your assignment, catch up to us. If all goes well, we should all be back together by the time we approach the other city. Get to work!”

Stark had no luck so far. Everything seemed to be going normally. The citizens of Contraxia were going about with their daily lives, almost ignorant of the tension in the air. Tony looked at his watch; almost noon. Might as well head back to meet with the others. He took one last look at the horizon, and his eyes widened. A dot was steadily growing larger, and it seemed to be a woman. He readied himself for whatever she was.

“Stop!” he called out when she was in hearing distance. “Who are you?”

She stopped within several feet from him and began hovering in air. “I am Kara Zor-El” she said. ‘You can call me Supergirl though. And you are?”

“Tony. Tony Stark.” He responded, but quickly became nervous when her eyes flashed dangerously. “Is there.. something wrong with that?”

“Yes, there is.” And without further warning, she flew at him.

Hey y'all. So it's just no working out for me to keep writing the story. I'm sorry, but that's how it is. If everyone wants though, I'm more than willing to share my plans for the story, so that you can at least know how it ends. Would y'all like that?
