During some downtime at work yesterday, several coworkers and myself had a lively debate about the various musical genres and the icons who shaped them.  It was pointed out that some genres have historically acknowledged top artists, so we set out to list those as well as try to decide who comprises the other spots. Here is what we concluded:

(readers of this Forum topic are encouraged to comment)

POP music--------the "King":   Michael Jackson

                                the "Queen":     Madonna

                                the "Prince":      Prince, of course...

the "Princess":    disputed consensus here; my coworkers were torn between Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez...any thoughts out there for this spot??

ROCK'N'ROLL music------the "King":  Elvis Presley, of course...

                                 the "Queen":     Joan Jett

the "Prince":     Kurt Cobain (although other possibles were mentioned)

the "Princess":   Gwen Stefani (again, other contenders were put forth)

**outside thoughts would be appreciated regarding these two spots**

SOUL music ------the "King":     James Brown

                                the "Queen":    Aretha Franklin

                                the "Prince":     Sam Cooke

                                the "Princess":      Gladys Knight

HEAVY METAL music -----the "King":    Metallica, of course...

                                 the "Queen":   Cherie Currie

the "Prince"/Princess":      undecided...(any thoughts out there??)

HIP-HOP Music-------the "King":    Afrika Bambaataa   (some say  R. Kelly or Dr. Dre)

the "Queen":    Queen Latifah, of course...

the "Prince":     contested between Snoop Dogg and Justin Bieber

                                     the "Princess":     Doja Cat

RAP Music-------the "King":     disputed between Tupac Shakur and Eminem and Jay-Z

                             the "Queen":    Missy Wright

the "Prince":     contested between many...any thoughts out there??

                             the "Princess":    L'il Kim

COUNTRY music------the "King":  contested between Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Jr. and Willie Nelson...

                                      the "Queen":   Loretta Lynn

the "Prince" :     disputed between Garth Brooks and George Strait...

the "Princess":   undecided between Dolly Parton, Shania Twain, and Reba McEntire...

***So that's all the musical genres we were able to discuss before work got up and running again, precluding further discussion/debate. I welcome any and all thoughts on these choices, as well as other musical genres that were inadvertently not covered herein...***

Tupac was well liked when he died young, and as is common anytime that happens, that person is overrated.

JayZ, objectively, isn't as good a rapper as Eminem. Also in sales, not as good. I think people are uncomfortable saying Eminem is best because he's white, but that's just the way it is.

For prince of rap maybe Nas or Big L.

Hey, Spooky! Thanks for the feedback and the kudos. I was only one of several debating musical icons at work while we were waiting on Maintenance to fix the broken conveyor belt, so I can't claim sole credit for this list. But it was notable enough for me to make a Forum topic post about it. Hopefully this will get more comments; gotta be some more music fans out there in our chess world.

I'm not sure where you learned about country music; but when you cross that old Red River, son, that just don't mean a thing, 'cause then you're down in Texas and Bob Wills is still the king.

Also, ranking Hank Williams Jr above his father is a joke, and ignoring Patsy Cline is a crime.

I don't know much about Country music, admittedly...those listings were by a coworker...but as stated by my disclaimer, all listings are subject to change, especially by those more knowledgeable than myself or my coworkers...

What about Trance music?! Paul Oakenfold was undoubtedly the King...don't know who the rest of the "royal family" woukd be, lol...

Of course everybody has their own favorites, and you did ask for input. I'm sure someone will give you some flack for leaving Chuck Berry off of the Rock-n-roll list, and others will wonder where Lady Gaga, Jerry Garcia, Keith Richards, the Beatles, etc are.

Avatar of wizardKM

True enough...and input is always welcome, of course. No misunderstanding was intended. Lady Gaga probably *should* be the "Princess" of Pop music, but I can't see her displacing Madonna as the "Queen", since she's widely regarded as such, as is Michael Jackson as the "King" of Pop, Elvis as the "King" of Rock, etc...your entries should likely displace the ones my coworkers came up with, especially since you're more knowledgeable about Country music...(my apologies for the mixup in usernames earlier; my brother borrowed my phone to play a few games but didn't logout when he gave me my phone back, so I inadvertently posted my reply to you in his username...oops!)...

Interesting list. My comment, for what it's worth, is that Black Sabbath is "King" of Metal. They were at it long before Metallica. If you disagree just make Sabbath the "Prince".

Avatar of wizardKM

Black Sabbath it is! I concur with making them the "King" of Heavy Metal....we can make Metallica the "Prince"...(admittedly I was a bit biased in that particular list since I'm a Metallica fan)...

Box Car Willie, Klaus Nomi, and if you’re gonna play in Texas you gotta have fiddle in the band.

Avatar of wizardKM

I'm not sure if they qualify as a "Prince" of the Heavy Metal list, but...who knows?? Ex post facto, they certainly deserved an honorable mention to the list...(when these lists were compiled, it was all casual--though heated at times, lol--and none of us are what might be termed true music aficionados/critics, but between all of us we certainly knew a fair bit about musical icons)...

I think Spooky and Gomer may be on to something about Black Sabbath making Heavy Metal what it is today, though...all due respect to Zeppelin, however!    happy

Avatar of wizardKM

One is never too late...I wrote that with my usual tongue-in-cheek humor, lol...I'm simply not sure if Led Zeppelin would be the "King" of Metal (they were roughly contemporaneous with Black Sabbath, who apparently were the pioneers of modern Metal, hence my concurring with Spooky/Gomer)...

There was third band in the unholy trinity (as some writers referred to them) of Led and Sabbath; Deep Purple.

Avatar of Gomer_Pyle

Yeah, those three were pretty good but if you're going to include Deep Purple you should also include Cream. If you include Cream you have to also include ... it'll never end.

My opinion of Zeppelin is that they did play some metal but their styles varied too widely to plunk them in one box. Sabbath did mellow out a little once in a while but their style and tone never strayed far from metal. Most people don't think of Sabbath because their name almost ruined them. They chose the name from a movie playing at a local theater when they had to come up with a new name for their band called Earth. That name kept many (most?) radio stations from giving them air time, except for the obligatory Paranoid and Iron Man. They totally missed that the band's lyrics were actually anti-Satan and anti-war. They just couldn't get past the name.

I'll slip away leaving a few quotes from Black Sabbath's Wikipedia page.

"They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time"

"Black Sabbath was released on Friday the 13th, February 1970, ...and is now generally accepted as the first heavy metal album."

"AllMusic's Steve Huey cite Paranoid as "one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time", which "defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history""

Avatar of Wits-end

As an “old” man… I had Sabbath’s first on 8 track, any of you youngsters know about them? I’ve argued for years their first lyrical content was benign, Fairies  Wear Boots? Cream at Royal Albert Hall is one of my “wish I was there” dreams.

Agreed. Ozzy is good but I tip my hat to Dio.
