Musicians and Chess

Many musicians and singers play chess as a form of entertainment, challenge, and relaxation.

The great conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein played chess while relaxing at Carnegie Hall.

Jon Anderson (1944- ), former lead vocalist of Yes, is a chess player. In 1971, he wrote the lyrics to Your Move, which was included in The Yes Album. The song uses various allusions to the game of chess.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the German composer and pianist, may have been a chess player. He was a good friend of Johann Maelzel, the builder of one of the first chess automatons.

Bono (1960- ), or Paul David Hewson, of U2, is a chess player. He said that chess was his greatest childhood pleasure. When he grew up, he wanted to be a professional chess player and studied many of the grandmaster games. He learned the game of chess from his father around age 12, during the Fischer-Spassky world championship match. Bono was the chess champion of his school. When he became interested in music, chess took a back seat.

David Bowie (1947-2016) played chess. There are several photographs of him playing chess.

Ray Charles (1930-2004), despite being blind, taught himself chess to get over heroin addiction. He played many chess games against Willie Nelson. Charles used a special chess board with raised squares and holes for pieces. His chess set is displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) was an avid chess player. He once carved his own chess set. He once mentioned that he hadn't been writing too much music because he was playing so much chess.

Singer-songwriter Neil Diamond (1941- ) plays chess.

Bob Dylan (1941- ) plays chess. He is an avid chess player who used to play chess for hours at the Cafe Figaro in Greenwich Village in New York.

Jay Z (1969- ), or Shawn Carter, is an American rapper. He learned chess from his father and has promoted the game by sponsoring tournaments.

Lady Gaga (1986- ) says she enjoys chess and that it is a lot of fun.

John Lennon (1940-1980), Sean Lennon (1975), and Yoko Ono (1933- ) were all chess players.

LL Cool J (1968- ), or James Todd Smith, is an American rapper. He is an avid chess fan.

Ludacris (1977- ) or Christopher Bridges, is an American rapper. He is a chess player.

Madonna (1958- ) plays chess. She can be seen playing chess in some of her music videos. She was tutored in chess by Alan Norris, a Scottish chess champion.

Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) was an American singer. He played and enjoyed chess. He had his own chess pieces made for him. Humphrey Bogart got Sinatra interested in chess. He played chess with Grandmaster Walter Browne in Las Vegas.

Will Smith (1968- ) is an American rapper and actor. He received chess lessons from Chicago's National Master Marvin Dandridge. Smith learned chess from his father at age 7.

Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip hop group. They are active in chess activities and promote the game. Its founder, RZA, won the first Hip-Hop Chess Federation championship.

hess players who are also musicians include GM Vishy Anand (he wrote that his hobby was music),Armand Blackmar (songwriter), IM Calvin Blocker (concert pianist), GM Svetozar Gligoric, Igor Ivanov (concert pianist), Francois-Andre Danican Philidor, Anthony Santasiere (pianist), Nigel Short (he had his own rock band), Vasily Smyslov, Mark Taimanov.

How strong in chess are the professional well-accomplished musicians who also can play chess?

How good in performing (or composing) music are the best professional chess players who can also perform/compose music?

Who is the one with the greatest achievements in both worlds?

     Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the top classical music composers of the 20th century, was well known in the Soviet Union as a devoted chess player. Whenever he and Serge Prokofiev (also a world-renowned composer) were at a musicians' union conference or other gathering they always set aside one evening for chess. Shostakovich chose top violinist David Oistrakh to premiere several of his compositions, and they spent most of their free time during rehearsals, performances and recording sessions playing chess in the green room.
