have you tried searching the forums for POINTS?

Member points, and I believe those are what you are referring too, are given every time you post or send someone a note.  They indicate the level at which a given member participates.  They don't really do anything else, except that if you get 1000 member points, you get a free T-Shirt.

Where does this info come from?  I hear members talking about it but haven't seen any official Chess.com comments on it...

Member points aren't just about getting the teeshirt! Lol. The teeshirt is like, just a side effect, a perk. I get frustrated by people who post single sentence blogs or really innane half-comments everywhere for that end alone.

Member points are acutally to demonstrate a members involvement in the overall community - and I'm glad they're there. They're also to help balance the possibility of rating obesession that can come from chess - they remind us that we can earn "points" not just due to how many other people we defeat, but through positive contribution as well.

The teeshirt reward is a way the team can thank those contributors who really help to improve the overall quality of the site by making thought-out, quality posts and blogs and encouraging comments.

They're not a reward for learning how to spam. Heh.
