Chess is a relatively recent invention. We've been playing it in its present form for only about 500 years (the en passant rule was the most recent change). There's perhaps 1,500 years of recorded chess history, from its origins in India as Chaturanga through the important Islamic period (from which we get terms such as "checkmate" and "rook") and then to its introduction into Europe about the year 1000 AD.

The game Go, which is probably more generally known in Asia than chess is in the West, is much older. Its legends make it 5,000 or more years old, though the historical record can trace its age to maybe 500 BC.

shatranj is what called chess in asia and it was first played by mughals, because they were the super power in subcontinent in 15th century they had lot of free time so they invented a game a time pass, which included 'vazir'(queen) 'badshah'(king) 'piyadeh'(pawns) and ghora(knight).then after the end of mughal empire it was played by indians and muslims from where they further enhanced it introduced some new rules.then comes the british in subcontinent from where they learned chess and then it was introduced in europe.

Chess made its way from India to Persia, then into the rest of the Muslim world. It is generally accepted that chess made its entry into Europe through contacts in the Mediterranean, not directly from India. For example, I believe there is a mention of chess pieces from Catalonia (part of modern-day Spain) around the year 1000--and this was right at a spot where the Muslim and Christian worlds met.
