Chess playing standard does not really matter unless you are making a career of it. It's a game played for fun. Striving to play well is the objective, and anyone can do this if motivated to.

In all things, including chess, it is important to not be blind to the expertise of others. This acts as a useful check on your own thoughts. For example, if you see a GM (or even an engine) analysis of a position and your own first thought disagrees with it, your second thought should be to try to understand the views of someone vastly more reliable than yourself. This facilitates an improvement in understanding.

The analogous principle applies to every field of science, mathematics, computer science and so on, for the same reasons. There are thousands of people who think they see why relativity is wrong, or why quantum mechanics is false. Typically those with expertise can see in a few minutes where their reasoning fails.
