No Streets/Highways Should Have Names

With the numbered roads, people will just call it the original name anyway and imagine every city having matching road #, that would get confusing

Number system would make it only better for machines, not for humans. Maybe when self driving cars become a common occurrence

There are other very good points made in this forum such as numbers being harder to remember and really big numbers in big cities

Even then, it’s not very practical

I just gave an example of how it would benefit people. If all roads were numbered sequentially, one would know exactly how many light before they have to make a turn. But names are meaningless in that regard. Actually I've seen some clusters of roads in Long island towns that seem to be in alphabetical order, but think it's just a coincidence. Think of how the federal government prefers to match exit numbers as closely as possible to mile markers on highways (this is why some exit numbers are skipped), similar idea. Self driving cars are a disaster waiting to happen.

It makes sense for numbers to be the primary distinction for roads with self driving cars, as it would prevent confusion between two similarly named roads. However, it would be a nightmare for humans to learn and understand, being forced to pull out a big document that decides the numbers for the location you want to go to.

Well the problem with a grid highway is that they would have to tear out all of the roads just to put a new one which will take FOREVER with these workers and A LOT of money

Not talking about building new roads, just how the existing ones are numbered. Although I did spend alot of my free time the last couple years redesigning a hypothetical US freeway system l, with dozens of new highways added! Here's my NYC plan: (and I still have to add a couple):

25 that’s why most people will wait until they aren’t experimental. Right now they would be, but I’m willing to bet they’ll get significantly better in the next 50-100 years.

Everything in bold/black lines is stuff I either added, extended, or renumbered/continued existing numbering along my new added roads (like I-80 into Long Island for example).

I would redesignate the grand central parkway between the triborough bridge and the van wyck expressway as a southern extension of I-87, and then continue that number down the van wyck to JFK airport. The remaining section of the Van wyck north of that merge would be numbered 680, and now that the 678 number is freed up, I would add a new highway going north-south from that same section of the grand central down towards the belt parkway above approximately Pennsylvania avenue.

It’s an interesting idea that would work for short trips but when you’re going to a whole new state or something it would be a nightmare finding your destination. Plus difficult to nationally organize and a potential nightmare for foreigners

The grid already exists, I just explained how it works. They just have to stop violating it with crap like I-99, I-75/85, 73/74, and I-238 nonsense.

I mean this is just unconscienable:
