if the pirates stayed in formation they would've been torn apart by the close-range fire weapons and the flanking maneuvers, there was no chance that they could've actually won the battle, the odds were too stacked against them, and the strategy of the Eari and the lack of discipline on the part of the pirates was just the final nail in the coffin
