Sorry if it’s a little scuffed, I made this in my notes app so it’s not perfect.

“You can’t do it, your leg isn’t fully healed yet!” Riley exclaimed. Me and him had been arguing all day on whether my leg was healed enough from my last injury I got fighting some military guards. I had been itching to leave our base of operations for the past week, but Riley kept insisting on me waiting until my leg was fully healed.

             “Fine” I gave in.

“Finally,” he said “you’ll thank me for this later.” And I went back to my room.

I wasn’t going to actually let my leg heal, I was to stubborn for that, I never give up easily.

Usually our heists go like this: I have a hidden communication device in my ear that Riley talks to me through. Riley usually stays at our quarters and has a bunch of high tech stuff—like in the spy movies and books where the smart person stays behind—and tells me where every guard is and what to do about every situation. It’s actually pretty helpful for when backup guards come. Then I go to wherever I’m going and steal stuff from the military. The reason we do it is because the military has been  using their supplies for bad stuff, like a couple weeks ago they used a gas bomb to force citizens to evacuate to one place. They say it’s because there’s some “not so great stuff” in those parts, but they keep it so vague I’m not sure anyone really believes it. So because of that me and Riley have been going on heists and stealing any stuff that they might use for whatever they’re going to do.

But that’s not what this heist is going to be like, I’m going to sneak out when Riley is distracted or falls asleep, and head to the next military base we were going to steal from, until I hurt my leg.

It took awhile for Riley to fall asleep. I decided a couple hours after I came up with my plan that waiting for him to be distracted wasn’t a good idea, his hearing is better than most people I’ve met, and I’ve met quite a lot of people.

It was around 24:00 when Riley fell asleep, much earlier than usual. I got out of bed, avoided all the creaky parts of the floor and headed over to my window. It was pretty dark—a new moon so there was less light than usual—which was good, that would make it harder for people to see me. I grabbed whatever gear I might need and leapt out my window and onto the streets.

It would take me fifteen or so minutes to get to the military base, I would just have to call a taxi or something to take me there. People in this city aren’t skeptical about taking a minor to a military base in the middle of the night. if I could drive, I definitely would be.

When I got to the military base it was 24:20, ten minutes before the guards shifts end and a new group comes in. It takes them five minutes to switch so that means I have five minutes to sneak in. This is one of the highest guarded military spots in the country, not a great spot for a solo mission. But as I said before, I am way too stubborn to back down, so I waited until the current guards shifts ended.

I was nearly asleep when I heard the guards move into the base, now was my chance. I made my way to one of the walls with a window that was easily accessible, trying my best to be as quiet as I could while carrying a bag full of gear.

The wall was maybe twenty feet tall with just bricks painted off white, which made it a bit easier to see. I jumped as high as I could while still being quiet. My fingers grabbed whatever I could on the wall and my feet slipped into the crevices. I slowly started making my way up, my leg was hurting more with ear step, until I realized it had already been half the time I had to get in, so I sped up.

The timer on my watch kept clicking down, 1:00… 0:59… 0:58… until it reached thirty seconds. At this point I was almost to the window and I was keeping a steady pace, until I heard it, the sounds of footsteps right behind me.

I looked down and saw the next shift of guards right below me, some even climbing the wall to get me. They must’ve known I was coming. Before I could do anything, one of the guards reached up and grabbed a hold of my leg. I panicked and shook my leg as hard as I could to get him off of me, and it worked. I climbed as fast as I could to the window, only barely managing to move out of the way in time of another guard trying to grab me. Before I knew it, I was halfway through the window. I pushed myself into the room and fell to the floor.

I quickly stood up, closed the window and locked it. My stomach and head hurt, and my heart was beating so loud I couldn’t hear myself think. I can’t lie, I was scared, like really scared. I had been doing this for four years and I had never once been caught like that, I had never done a solo mission either. I used something in the room to balance myself on my one good leg. I must’ve hit my head because I was dizzy as well. I hacked and gagged as I looked around the room. I didn’t have much time to take in the scene, but from what I saw, I was in a dark room with a messy wooden desk, nothing else was in the room.

I limped toward the door that I saw earlier and went out, I was still a little dizzy but I could see fine by now. Outside of the door was a dimly lit hallway with what looked like a lobby at the end of it. I walked towards it, careful not to put too much pressure on my injured leg. As I walked I noticed something, something that felt wrong, something that made me feel like I should run away.  My anxiety grew and I got a feeling in my chest that made me feel like I was gonna throw up. I started sweating profusely, I could tell something was wrong. Suddenly the dim light ahead of me went out and all the walls fell over. The walls were cardboard. Guards came from behind the cardboard walls and surrounded me.

“Looks like we finally caught you,” a gruff, low voice said from the darkness. “We’ve been waiting for you to come here for months, and here you are, finally.” The voice came out of the darkness to reveal a man wearing all black, a bandana on his face to cover it, and his hair slicked back tightly.

“Take her to the truck that leads to Pronimis” The man said. Pronimis was the highest guarded prison in the entire world. They know who I am, I realized with panic, they know I’ve robbed countless military bases in attempt to force them to stop driving citizens out of their homes. This was possibly the worse thing I could’ve heard from that man.

The guards that were surrounding me threw a net on me and dragged me out to their truck. I tried fighting back but it was useless so I gave up by the time we left the building, plus my leg was burning in pain from all the stunts I had pulled that night. I was going to Pronimis after all.

The guards threw me into the truck, which hurt my leg even more, and slammed the door. I looked up and saw a giant screen with all my information being projected.
