Good post SQ.I support your policy. If you like I can report it to Kohai. He is a staff member.
Perverts on the site
Only chat disabled? Ridiculous. Should get banned, at the very least. If verified personal data is available, post the name in public (this probably would require changing the site policy on privacy, and would only work for paying members).
@Ishan01 -- Kohai is a she, not he.
Hi Ajatsatru, he sent it in a private message to me, I reported it to staff here, and they have just disabled his ability to chat, he is still a member here.
I could post his profile link, but that would be classed as naming and shaming.
^would that be bad?
i have reported members in the past for racist comments, and each time they have been banned. I'm pretty shocked that chess.com hasn't been more aggressive in this case
SQ, I think everything you did was great, but Chess.com dropped the ball. So now we chess players should take things into our own hands. The group Wall of Shame, which you know about, is ideal. They will list the guy's name, what he did, etc. and mindful players will ostracize him. Chess.com's policy seems to be neither aid nor hinder us in the matter of fighting against sex predators and perverts. Until they change their policy, I suggest we do anything we can creatively come up with regardless of anything getting out of hand. This MAY force Chess.com to possibly take a stance on the issue.
I totally agree with SafariQueen. This comes up often. This type of behavior is a really common problem, especially affecting women on the site. Just having one particular site admin who won't tolerate it is not a solution. We need chess.com to get serious about stopping it. Too often the response seems to be "boys will be boys" and little is done. Chess.com needs to adopt zero tolerance for this.
I'd send a screen cap of the message (sans the photo) to all three owners of chess.com and ask them why this account is still open.
I have had several experiences here, and usually it takes more than one messag to the staff to get things done.
I message Erik the owner today too, but he has not answered me yet, and I have also posted this on his wall.
It's time for us all to take a stand, it's been going on way too long.
Chess.com say that sexual images shouls not be posted in public forums, but we are supposed to sit back and suck it up when we receive such crude messages and images in a private message.
Get real chess.com
Hi LegoPirateSenior,
I had an incident last year with a titled member, I sent the content of the messages to both Erik and Jay, neither of them responded to my message or concerns, and in fact I had reported it to the staff here, and it took my going public in a group about it, that kick started chess into taking any action. The titled member was eventually banned.
Hi everyone,
Yesterday I was chatting to a new ‘Friend’, it was just a general chat, but then he started asking me if I wanted to see his friend.
I asked him which friend, and he replied the one between my legs, I told him, sorry I don’t know which friend you are talking about. He then proceeded to post a picture, although I knew what it was going to be of, I did not look at it, and asked a male friend of mine to look at it for me, which he did, and he confirmed my suspicions.
So I duly reported this incident to chess.com, and they have just disabled the guy’s ability to chat on the site.
I do feel as a mother and female member of the site, that this action is not good enough, and that this guy should at the least have been banned.
This is not a one off incident, and there have been a number of postings on the site regarding perverts, some going back 7 years and it appears that chess.com are not that interested in dealing with them in the appropriate manner, and that as long as they have numbers for which they earn money via advertising, they will not take this matter seriously.
We must remember that there are young teenagers on the site, they may be easily swayed by the perverts on the site to send them pictures of themselves, because trust me, women here get asked to send naked pictures of themselves to those types of people.
It is time for all the women and respectable men on this site to stand together, and ask Chess.com to take this matter more seriously than they do.
Zero Tolerance.
