Philosophical/scientific materialism: nihilism in disguise?

Let me define the terms as they will be used in this thread. If you insist upon different definitions, start you own thread.

Philosophical materialism: everything that truly exists is matter; all phenomena we see are a result of material interactions. Note: I am modifying this to include other forms of existence such as force or energy, which is a more modern definition.

Scientific materialism: the physical world we study is all that exists, and that nothing supernatural exists.

Nihilism: the rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless.

For better or for worse, I have used these definitions courtesy of Google if you care to cross reference them.

I don’t think, by the way, scientific and philosophical materialism are one and the same. Perhaps you don’t agree. Make your case.

Now keep your gloves up and no hitting below the belt.

Does it say everything is meaningless as in nihilism?

Believe = belief. Oops.

Does materialism reject all beliefs and consider everything to be meaningless as in nihilism?

Avatar of hapless_fool
What do you mean by ‘it’? Let’s be careful with our terms here.

I was referring to the school of thought

We keep posting by each other. Sorry.

So, the question is: does materialism equate to nihilism?

Materialism as a school of thought. Does it equate to nihilism?
Avatar of DarthPhy

I don't think so

We can reject everything and say everything leads to nothing. Or we can say everything happens because of something and understand it or embrace it. Nihilism will force you to say things are meaningless. Materialism lets you choose what you want to believe.

Yes

How do we generate morality from materialism? Nature is red in tooth and claw. Evolution dictates that organisms that don’t maintain an advantage for reproduction will die, no mercy extended. Doesn’t sound very more to me.

What's the point of this ?

Avatar of hapless_fool
So #15 is saying morals are a ‘thing’? That sounds weird.
Avatar of DarthPhy

19 In what context?

Avatar of hapless_fool
#17 Honestly, to amuse ourselves ‘til we die, I guess.

Both aren't wrong. Morals are just a human construct. There is no right and wrong. Everything is made up to make our body feel good when the good hormones are released. That makes us materialistic? Cos we made everything the way it is only to feed our brain some hormones?

Avatar of DarthPhy

25 Well, what we consider as morals are what our society collectively chose. Not all cultures share the same morals.

Do you think killing animals for food is good? I'm just taking an example to state a point. Does killing go against your morals? At what point does killing become immoral?
