I play the piano, I studied it in college for awhile.

A really cool short cut to help you learn how to play a piano well enough to make music on it and even have a decent chance of learning by ear to improvise is, simply play only on the white keys. Its almost impossible to play a sour sounding note. Some of the notes you'll play, might not be the right ones to create the sound of a chord change in a rhythmic fashion, but atleast they will harmonize with the rest of the notes you'd be playing. 

If you kept it up you could learn not only a lot about playing the piano, but music structure in general as well. If you can finger two or three note chords with your left hand and simply try to find melodic fills with your right hand, you could really start to sound pretty good, pretty fast.
