"Nature Chess"

We broke out our 3rd-edition set of "Hive" last night for a few quick games before bed.  Every time I play it, I like it more & more.  I think there's a lot of appeal for people who already like chess, but it only takes 15-20 minutes to play a thoughtful game.

You play by laying tiles and you can later move the tiles you've added to the "hive" - according to the type of bug you're moving. Each has its own special move. The object is to completely surround the tile representing your opponent's Queen Bee.  The strategic nuances take a few games to appreciate!

It's great too, because there's no board. The Bakelite tiles come with a vinyl carrying case and if you've got that, all you need to play is a relatively flat surface.  Good times.  There's also an iPhone app.

Does one need to go in for weight-training before playing? How big are those pieces?

Haha! Yeah, I forgot to include the conventional pencil to show scale.  :)

They have a pleasant heftiness to be sure, but no more than that.  Size-wise, I don't know... small-shortbread-cookie-sized?  :)

That's what somebody else told me last time ...

Wow! That's some interesting geology, but the game design is effectively miniaturized.  :)
