It might be bad but it's my sense of humor

The ratings in chess.com do not equate with FIDE or USCF ratings. The amount they differ depends on how much the online player uses all the tools available.

For example, my chess.com rating is probably 500-600 points higher than my OTB rating would be because I make full use of databases, my 70+ chess books, the analysis board, the time available for each move and the notes tab. Someone who plays online chess just as they would OTB may have a rating that is very close to their OTB rating.

The chess.com ratings are only good for comparing chess.com players against each other. They do not directly translate to any other system, no matter what formula you apply.

How is that arrogance? My sense of humor is different then yours.

Just laughing at a serious and respectable answer is arrogant. I don't understand what exactly you found funny about it.

I wouldn't call my answer that serious or that respectable. I was being a bit vague and sarcastic. It was perhaps a measure of my frustration with the continued, ill-informed pronouncements about what the ratings mean. I was certainly not offended by a little LOL.

Oh. Maybe it's down to my asbergers, but I still can't see any sarcasm in there or anything that could be found humorous.

Anyway, I must be missing something and clearly I've got this one majorly wrong. Sorry wilt18, I hope you'll accept my apology.

Another inane post about ratings comparisons.

Chess.com's ratings are "accurate" when compared to other chess.com ratings, assuming the players you are comparing have played a large number of games and against approximately the same level of opposition (average rating of opponent).

There are far too many variables to compare chess.com ratings with postal, other online sites, or over the board ratings. Doesn't compute! There is no magic conversion formula either.

 ok Thanks!

It all depends on the sampling size and the accuracy of the results and it really does not matter what stats says, the state of the equation is posed as in a continous performance.

Only time and games played can give us the outcome of the tournament.

In any event Shirov will end up at least in the 3rd or 4th position at worst at the end of the tournament, just a guess.

ok Thanks! So I've played about 500 games and came up with a rating of 1300ish. I don't really use the analysis board. I occasionally do but I play it like an OTB game so would that mean that my rating MIGHT be around 1300?

xiii-Dex

yeah, I play like it is OTB too, but according to chessmaster 10th edition, my rating is closer to 1200

I average around 1550 on chess.com.  I think my USCF rating would be higher than that but I've never tested it.  I've always assumed I'm about a USCF 1700.

Also it makes a big difference how far you set the minimum rating for a game.  Maybe if you set it at a level where you win and lose 50% of the time, the rating might be more accurate--but probably not.  I know when I don't set the minumim rating of a player that I'll accept then my rating will jump because I'll get a bunch of easy wins from much lower rated players.  Also, I selected to not play any computers.  This probably makes a difference as well.
