Or.....after he murdered her he decided he needed an alibi.
So, he jumped in the car and drove across town to the local chess/who dunnit murder mystery club.
He remembered when he got there he'd left his cooker on so, he said bye to the people in the club and sped back across town.
Traffic police took his number plate and arrived out to find a smoking house, an endless pit with a body and a knife.
they then arrested the agitated and verrrry distressed man.

Yeah. I had gone to sleep in 127. So here’s the answer: the man didn’t ask the police how his wife had died. So the police knew he had murdered his wife and arrested him.
