I googled why are Russians so gud at chess and here is what it came up with.

Why are the Russians and their neighbors so good at chess? Because the Soviets subsidized the game. Chess has long been popular in Russia—Czar Ivan IV is thought to have died while playing a match in 1584. After the Bolsheviks took power in 1917, it became a national pastime.

How does this make them gud at chess? Kind of bread if you ask me

It also helps to be from a country with long hard winters. You don't see many Jamaican chess players right? Turns out when people have an option they don't want to sit inside all day... for months tongue.png

Before computers allowed knowledge to be shared quickly and easily, To be the best, you had to learn from the best, and all the best players were in russia, so they taught players, then those players taught other players... and that made a cycle continued for a little while, until Fischer broke it.

The Soviet Union was the first country in the world to subsidize chess as a system that was tied to government. It was common to train aspiring young players at established academies, select the most promising talents for further guidance by elite veterans (including world champions), and providing luxurious benefits on top of a base income that was not given to ordinary citizens. To be a professional chess player to them was a matter of honor and national pride. Even after the breakup of the Soviet Union, chess continues to be popular to this day because of the long standing tradition of fostering greatness and love of the game.

Mozart goes to heaven, and when he gets there, St. Peter tells him he can meet anyone that has ever lived.  Curious, he asks to meet the greatest composer to ever live.  So they walk over to a man who Mozart had never even heard of.  Mozart starts talking to him and comes back to St. Peter.

Mozart, "Are you sure you got the right guy? This guy is an illiterate pig farmer!"

St. Peter, "Yes, if someone had bothered to teach him how to write music, HE would have been the very best."

That, my friend, is the actual secret to the Soviet system.  They taught everyone chess, so they could find the people who were the best by test.
