Sci Fi

"We" by Yevgeny Zamyatin is the best work of literary science fiction ever. In fact, it was the first work of science fiction ever - ivandh.

This "fact" is totally preposterous - and incorrect. The Wikipedia article I cite is hardly the last word on the subject, but it is certainly way more authoritiative than deciding that "We" is the first work of science fiction ever! BTW it is a classic novel and  underrated compared to 1984 and Brave New World, as all 3 works are often compared with each other.

And I also sincerely doubt that "We" is the best work of literary sci-fi ever, but what do I know? I only have a BA in English LIt, and I've only read sci-fi by Jules Verne, H G Wells, Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Michael Crichton, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K Le Guin, and maybe several dozen other sci-fi writers. Still, it obviously might be someone else's favorite sci-fi novel, but that doesn't automatically make it the best one ever written.

Dancidoll if you want to read some more sci-fi (all of which predates We BTW) try reading some works by Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, First Men on the Moon, Master of the World, From the Earth to the Moon) and H G Wells (The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The Food of the Gods, First Men on the Moon etc)

I've read Dick's novel that was transformed into Blade Runner and enjoyed it. I've also read more than half of Stephen King's novels as well. I wanted to put a plug in for the late Michael Crichton's novels as well. With the exception of "Sphere," (which I never quite got) I found his work most interesting and enjoyable. I only wish there was more.

I didn't see Green Lantern, but I saw Captain America. To be honest, I was slightly disappointed. Don't me wrong, I enjoyed watching the movie! But I was hoping for a bit more out of it. Someone described it as feeling like it was just a rushed Avengers prequel, and I sort of agree. But again, I did enjoy it. I just hope that Avengers is good, because I'm struggling to keep my expectations down which means I will be crushed if it isn't!

Also, in regards to TV shows, I have to say I always loved the three Stargate series (SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe). I don't know how others here feel about them, but I've always had a soft spot for that rediculous looking "event horizon."   :)

If you are a big Lord of the Rings fan, i would advise you to read some Raymond E Feist, start with The Magician, as fine a fantasy novel as ever written in my opinion. If you love it, and i have not met many who did not, then there are many books in the series and you will not be going out for quite a while once you are in his wonderful world, they are old now, over 20 years or so, but he is still writing and the saga continues. . . . .

I loved Stargate SG-1 for the 1st few several seasons, until RDA left.  It was lousy after that; I especially loathed Claudia Black's character.  I didn't care for Atlantis at all & Universe even less!

I've read many of Feist's books & really liked them with the glaring exception of that trilogy (?) he co-wrote with Janny Wurts; it was BORING!

I really enjoyed Dennis McKiernan's Mithgar series, at first it seemed like a LOTR ripoff but eventually would stand on its own 2 feet as new novels were published...

I did see the Green Lantern movie; it was slow slow slow.

My favorite was "Deep Space Nine",but I guess I'm in the minority there, also liked Tom Baker,as "Doctor Who".

Have you seen the new series of Doctor Who, with Eccelson(?), or Tennant?  Tennant rivals Tom Baker as the best Doctor IMO.  Also did any one see Thor? I haven't because it wasn't faithful to the comic book as I remember it.

Dune is one of the finest scifi novels and certainly my favorite.

Lets see...some good scifi series are x-files (up to season 5), Firefly, Threshold...

I feel like I am forgetting quite a few.

For some reason, I have never taken a liking to David Tennant.  I liked how they did the seasons with him with the episodes being mostly stand-alone, rather than a season long arc like with Matt Smith.  I have always found him to be way too overdramatic.

I liked Christopher Eccelson a lot, but he only went for a single season :(  For the reboot of Doctor Who though, he was a great one.  Are you my mummy?

Nobody can touch Tom Baker though; he is a legend.  I prefer the theme song during his time to the latest versions during the last three doctors.

I like both star wars and lord of the rings but star wars is the best by far.

Gandalf or Dumbledore? I would have to say Gandalf would win i never like Dumbledore lol

Also i agree picard would beat Kirk but It would be very close.

Still reading will add more :)
