what sports do you chess people play?

Although some people might only play chess (just like how some people play only sports), I feel like most chess players play other things too.

The only sport I've ever played really competitively is golf. By "competitively" I mean like playing in tournaments, or playing on a school team or something like that.

If less competitive and more friendly, then I also play basketball a lot and sometimes play baseball, American football, soccer, hockey and many other sports too. Big difference between playing something like basketball at a park with friends and playing in something more competitive like playing on a school team though.

Also technically a "sport" (although way less common) which I tried for my first time last month is the sport Airsoft. It is kind of like paintball, but instead of paint (which can also hurt more and leave bruises) Airsoft uses bb pellets (and can still leave marks on the skin for a few days, but it doesn't hurt as much; it is just a bit stingy for a few seconds) from replica guns. It was fun to try, but I can't imagine real war with real guns. That sounds very different and not fun at all. If you haven't tried Airsoft before, just imagine a bunch of friends with safety gear (like specialized googles) and toys shooting at each other in the woods. That isn't a perfect description, but it is close enough and it was fun happy.png

paintball can be a lot of fun

Avatar of Lily1564

oh yeah. is it really a sport tho?

It can be physically demanding, especially in summer, it is competitive, requires a degree of skill, so I'd say yes. I guess it depends on how you define sport.

true. Ive only played paintball at a fall festival so I dont really know

It is an interesting question that reasonable can disagree on. Is autoracing a sport? How about skiing?

yes both are competitive, and I think both might be in the olympics

Avatar of dwhitt2001

I agree in both cases.  Is playing bingo a sport? How about checkers?

Yes! I used to have super similar view on sports too. I'd be really selective on what I'd consider a real sport or not. However, just like @dwhitt2001 described, it depends on how one defines "sport."

In the past, I used to consider physical and competitive activities such as Baseball, Basketball, Soccer etc. as "sports" but what about other activities less common that are also physically demanding? Things like "Swimming" or "Sprints" (Running) I didn't think were sports at the time; they felt to me more like Olympic events. Then there were even less things like Checkers or Chess with I considered games - board games to be more precise.

Now I've since changed my views on it. I consider (most) Olympic events to be sports now too. Swimming and Sprints (Running) I now consider a sport. Maybe I was hesitant to include things like this in the same category as other sports because other sports tend to have teams or some scoring system rather than just competing for a fastest time. What I consider a sport has shifted over time as I've become more open-minded to what a "sport" actually means. happy.png

Bingo I consider a "game" or hobby (not a sport) and checkers I consider a "game" (I also consider chess a "game" too) because both of these lack the physical element required to consider it a sport. In the case of Bingo, it is even luck based, correct?

Bingo is pure luck, while there is some amount of skill in checkers
