All the Fire emblem sword fighters blush and look away. Lucina and Marth especially lol (I guess Corrin is different enough though). Also, Peach and Daisy; I mean, seriously? I think Daisy as an alternate would make sense, but to be another character I find too similar.
I don't think you really get the idea of Echo Fighters. Sakurai is acknowledging that they are clones and treats them as such. Lucina and Daisy don't even have their own number. Lucina has Marth's one with an ε at the end of it, and Daisy is the same. They are nothing more then clones, and are treated as such. Sakurai said that echo fighters won't be added as DLC, so we have to consider originality above all else. Byleth might have been a Fire Emblem fighter, but they seemed different enough to me
Minecraft Steve has just been announced earlier today for Smash Bros.
I believe this is a character slot that could have been better used for sure. I can understand expanding into other games and fanbases (in which Minecraft is popular by many for sure), but I don't think this was the best possible choice.
@edgeworth09 and I (and a few other members at other times) have discussed what characters I'd like to potentially see in Smash Bros, but with only 2 official character slots left to be revealed (1 to complete the pass and 1 bonus character) - I suspect that both characters may be connected somehow. Personally, I'd love to see Reimu and Marisa (Touhou) make it into the series. Only time will tell though.

There are two characters left to be released (one character to complete the pass and one 'bonus' character) with some speculating that these two characters may be related. Two characters left? I just had an epiphany moment: What if it is Master Hand & Crazy Hand? Let us not forget the Melee glitch that made Master Hand playable; Sakurai has to know about this. Alternatively, maybe Master Hand and Crazy Hand will be the same character (as a different skin) and the final 'bonus' character might be Tabuu (Brawl). This idea holds merit and it seems like a fitting way to end the Super Smash Bros. series: after all; Master Hand was a critical part of the first game (N64). If Master Hand is one of the characters - don't forget, you heard it here first folks!

I was literally about to correct this error this morning, but then I found that you found it first 
Yes, there are 4 left. I mis-counted because I was talking to another friend about the same topic a while back and we were referring to the pass number and not what is left (so the numbers were likely still stuck in my head).
To clarify, it is a total of 4 characters left. 2 more "regular characters" (in which Sakurai said were all from serie[s] not previously entered yet; so that means no more Fire Emblem characters or Mario clone characters like Daisy), a 3rd "regular character (one that "completes the pass" I mentioned) and the 4th being the bonus character.
Speaking of which, who else watched the "live" (but pre-recorded [just released]) video of Sakurai explaining the moveset for Steve? The blocks could be overpowered for edge guarding and I could see the "gliding" giving players Meta-Knight flashbacks to Brawl.
I watched the live stream. It was interesting. I agree with you about him being overpowered
