The 5 best moves of ancient ches! Number 3

rrrttt

This I believe is the third best move of ancient chess. This was played in a game Justly called the Peruvian Immortal

Very nice. I'd hate to be on the end of that one.

Nice miniature rrrttt, and very subtle too, as black had no choice but to take the Rook, as well as the fact that she was in a quandary (if she didn't take the rook on a1, she would have to defend, but where? as both Bishops are bearing down. b6 would be no good as Na4 pressuring, and neither would the pawn grab on b4, as Rxa7, etc..)  The double Rook sacrifice by White puts the black Queen totally out of play, provided that the series of 'checks' is well calculated. But modern masters would have prevented this, I think, showing how these 'showpiece' miniatures are pretty much a thing of the past.

Well, without taking the rook, the queen would be defending a6.  But since the queen is trapped, the only other option without losing the queen is 1... Qxb2, but that just ends up in the same result.

The best move is probably 1... Ne5, but that still results in a losing position.
