Very funny!
I wonder if being a chess player makes me a better gamer overall? What do you think? Is there a translation effect?

Thanks for explaining that. For me, it was always something of a quandry because I was a wargamer first (by that, I mean I use to play the hardcore, old-school wargames that were actually used by the military, games such as TAC AIR and GULF STRIKE) and then a chess player. So I was never sure if wargaming made be a better chess player or did chess make me a better gamer.
I'll tell you one thing for sure: wargaming, be it the hardcore stuff or chess, made me a better over-all strategist (along with an abiding interest in military history). World in Conflict might just be a fun RTS (i.e., not hardcore), but it has enough realism that it demands real-world tactics for victory. I often see kids who grew up on gamey RTS titles get cut to ribbons in the game because they don't flank, feint, utilize combined arms or disperse their units. Why should they? After all, in countless other RTS titles, such tactics were never necessary as a simple tank rush would do the trick. Well, WiC is sending them all back to school.
I tell ya, kids these days don't realize how sophisticated some of these games can be. You can actually get a pretty decent education in military matters from them!

World in Conflict X-Mas Trailer
Massive just released this er...holiday-themed trailer, sporting the new movie maker sound feature.
"Woo Hoo! World in Conflict!"
I've got to say Massive is doing a wonderful job enhancing this game and supporting the community that loves it. Well done!
Besides chess, I enjoy all sorts of other, more modern wargames. One of my current favorites is Massive's World in Conflict. I thought I share a few snapshots of a recent battle.
BTW: 56Kers might want to avoid this picture-heavy thread!
For this game, I was assigned some Soviet infantry to capture a seaside resort....
My forces arrived and quickly came under enemy helicopter attack. My ZSU AA gun and a BMP fought them off....
One Cobra gunship crashed right behind my BMP!
Well, after that skirmish, my infantry spread out and occupied a home on a small hill. Before too long, enemy infanty occupied a neighboring house and began taking shots at us. Darn neighbors! Some of my infantry assaulted the enemy-occupied house....
Things were going well until those pesky enemy 'copters showed up again and straffed the heck out of my guys and blew up our house....
Enough's enough! I, along with a Soviet ally, were on the horn calling for some friendly CAP! Here they come:
Between us, we splashed four enemy birds!
Back to the ground action. Enemy infantry launched an assault for the center of the seaside resort. Fortunately, I had a sniper hiding in one of the buildings. See that three-storey building? The shot that got that enemy soldier in the foreground came from there....
Defend Donut World to the last man!!!!
Victory!
Somewhere on the far side of the island, things must have taken a serious turn for the worst. See that 'falling star'? It's a nuke. Yeah, a Soviet tactical nuke. Don't know who launched it, but I was glad I was on the other side of the island.
That's a big mushroom cloud....
As we were distracted by the big show yonder, some enemy tanks arrived. We were hard pressed and had to call in for some tac-air....
It was a bad day for enemy tankers....
The game ended shortly after that with a Soviet victory. This is what the town looked like at the end of the battle:
Hope you enjoyed this break from the more artist combat of chess.
WiC is a very addicting game as it really allows you to enact all those war fantasies you had as a kid with your plastic toy soldiers!
