There are millions of stray cats in the world, all doing their best to survive in a man-dominated environment. Each one is supposed to have nine lives, but in reality it has only one and that life can often be harsh and painful. The frequently wretched conditions under which these unfortunate animals are forced to live should shame us all. Four thousand years ago we made a contract with the cat : you help us and we will look after you; you protect our food stores from mice and rats and we will care for you and protect you. This was a fair contract and both sides benefited. Out of it grew the domestic cat , more friendly, more kittenish than its wild ancestors and a valued servant in the home
