The consensus of "expert" opinion seems to be Michael Jordan, with the caveat that LeBron James is still playing and continued stardom with a couple more championships for him would tip the balance.
Others to consider:
George Mikan--played in the NBA precursors National Basketball League and Basketball Association of America as well as the early days of the NBA. Any time he was not injured for the playoffs his team cruised to the title. No one else has dominated the game so completely.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar gets a lot of mention. I don't rate him in the top five.
Bill Russell is probably the best ever, because he did more than anyone else to make his team win. Eleven championships is the all-time record for any player in any sport in America.
If I could pick one player from all that I've seen (since 1960) to start an NBA team I'd have to flip a coin between Wilt Chamberlain and Magic Johnson.

Chamberlain, Jabbar, Miken, Dr. J, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Jordan, Russell…….
