I'm away, boiling my spuds...

I'd vote for you as Prez, kayak.  Make me Vice-Prez and we could make a fortune selling off ex-Royals on the international market.

Indeed, this is a throwback to our feudal past, and iniquitous class system.  Your life is determined by the lottery of an accident of birth, and there is not much anyone can do about it.  In a way, this is a form of mental cruelty to the (admittedly highly privileged) incumbents: forced to live life in a gilded fishbowl, forever under scrutiny, brought up in an artificial world with their lives determined for them.  It is, as you point out, the ultimate embodiment of celebrity worship.

That's a good analysis, TheChairmaker:)

Yup, but not a bad point nevertheless.

And no British monarch has led the country in battle since Richard the Third.  Maybe we should re-introduce this tradition, we might be less inclined to invade the Middle East quite so often.

I thought the English monarchy was for a long term study on the effects of inbreeding on ear size.

Not its main intended function, but a possible useful by-product.  And Charles' ears can be used as satellite receivers in remote regions.

If you think the monarchy is expensive, imagine our past prime ministers as presidents and the expenses they would rack up. President Tony Blair? president David Cameron? At least the queen isnt corrupt and working to her own agenda. She is non political but represents us abroad, she brings in half a billion a year in tourism and is a great diplomat respected the world over.

I beg to differ! Isn't the Queen 'pre-programmed' through breeding to ensure the survival of the Monarchy, which in itself is a 'Political Agenda'? Don't forget that before the establishment of 'Parliament' the 'Royal Rule' was highly 'Political'. Time has a way of allowing us to forget 'facts'!!

Talking of facts...........The Monarchy would once have sent you to the gallows for treason.

Off with his head! Yell

That's why Democracy is greater than Monarchy!! And, although I could be wrong, I believe that 'Our Monarchy' would love to send people like me to the gallows!.... I am aware!

Off with his head!

A wee English Rose called Kay

Did dream she'd be Queen one day

But the class system said

"You're right off your head

A commoner forever you'll stay."

Sorry kayak...but you'll always be Royalty on the forums!  Wink

I think the general view of the British monarchy is my country seems to be quite different to that of the people of Great Britain itself. I only speak from the personal experiences from my own relatively short life (so farSurprised) I cal also hopefully provide an interesting perspective as one who has lived in both Australia and The United States. Australia, since 1901, has been a federal constitutional monarchy. This means that for all intents, purposes and practicalities, it has been no different to a republic. It does not answer in any way to the British Government or the British people. However it has maintained the British monarch as it's head of state. She is "The Queen of Australia". In other words we "borrow" her as our H.O.S. as does Canada, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Jamaica and many of the other Commonwealth Countries. And it seems she is happy to be borrowed. We've never had any complaints from her. In practice the Prime minister and his cabinet rule the country and only answer to the opposition, the governor general in consitutional matters, and the people of course.

Some years ago the people of Australia decided against becoming a republic in national referendum. The reason was more that they were not satisfied with the models offered than they were of becoming a republic per se. And this is because our constitutional monarchy has served us very well for nearly 120 years. It is a very stable form of goverment. Queen Elizabeth 2 herself; the person, not "the crown" has had a lot to do with that yes. Not her family or her "hangers on"..The woman herself. She is a strong, steady and bravely stoic person who has fulfilled her destiny above and beyond the call of duty. She is a magnificent role model to diginity and strength. She is adored in Australia and alsways has been. I for one would be only too happy to pay some taxes to have her here.

The US president is ther for 8 years max. The you get somebody else. And so it goes. There is a difference between a great queen or king and a president. It is hard to put your finger on it but it's significant. Just a few thoughts. Be my guest. Tear them to piecesLaughing

Kayak (presuming you live in Britain - forgive me if I am wrong) you will never be executed for anything if you stay there. Be thankful you don't live in Indonesia under their current regime. Because you would be put to death by means nowhere near as humane and instant as the gallows. Off topic yes. Promise I won't deviate again Chair.Embarassed
