There are tons and tons of alcoholics out there. Alcoholic role call!

@melvingarvey Yes, I am a USAF veteran.  Not sure what the point of that is.  I was also a methhead for 25 years, a crackhead for 10, and smoked weed for 33 years.  I was homeless for most of 1994.  So you're right, I haven't experienced what you have in life and wouldn't understand what you went through.  I lived next door to a homeless encampment, (since closed by the city), and adopted two dogs who were abandoned there.  You can see them, along with the other 15 rescues I brought here (all fixed, all had their shots, and are healthy and loved.)  You can see them on the "for stupidmonkey8 and lennystynx" forum.  If you're curious that is.  I try to help dogs and others whenever I can.  That's why, unlike your friends, I would've had an intervention with you years ago but I hope you stick to sobriety.  I didn't have any help quitting either,  I couldn't quit cold turkey but I slowly weaned myself off drugs.  That worked for me.  I used to be in denial like you.  I would tell my counselor "I'm not an addict.  I just don't want to quit."  I'm sure she thought to herself, "You don't want to quit because you're addicted." She would've been right, although I wouldn't admit it then.  Anyway, good luck.

I quit about five years ago.

From a pack a day to zero in one step.

Your cat is currently winning the thread as biggest alcoholic. If anyone can beat the cat you will be champion. I know you’re out there it’s one in ten people can anyone beat 70 drinks a week?

Melvin gets the achievement award for fighting 400 homeless people while drunk that is pretty insane/crazy. Props. Congrats on getting sober tho to you and dogknight

An Irishman was visiting Canada 🇨🇦 and became completely inebriated.  He was pulled over and arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.  At his trial, the judge gave Paddy an opportunity to explain himself.  “Well, your honor, I was driving along and saw a road sign which read:  Drink Canada Dry!  And that’s exactly what I did!”

🤣

The Irish - Gotta love them ☘️ 🇮🇪

At the height of my drinking, I could easily throw down 100 drinks in one week.  Probably why, at the age of. 19, I wound up in AA.

Even my college fraternity drinking buddies were like - WTF is wrong with this guy???   🤣

At the Redneck AA club I frequently was at, in Miami Florida in the early 90’s, I had the reputation of being about the most pitiful case they had ever seen.

God Bless ‘em. I even had me a nickname. They called me “Dummy.”

I recently did a 10 day alcohol detox at a medical facility because it would have been too dangerous for me to attempt to stop without medication and would have experienced Delirium Tremens. I shouldn't have read about DT because it sounds terrifying but with Librium four times a day and Pabrinex injections I didn't experience any withdrawal symptoms and my last drink was the day I was admitted 31 days ago. I'm now on anti-craving Acamprosate for up to a year and am drinking a lot more tea and coffee so have decaf for the evenings. Sometimes I think about never being able to have a chilled chardonnay with a meal or a nice port with a cheese board ever again but quitting the booze was long overdue. I was drinking whiskey from the bottle as soon as I woke up every day and was constantly dehydrated with cold night sweats, body shakes and vomiting if I didn't drink. Since I stopped drinking I've got my life back. Still early days but I'm not tempted to buy alcohol and can be in pubs around people drinking.

I’ve heard about that people can actually go crazy for a while or actually die from quitting alcohol cold Turkey

Congratulations on getting sober!  :-)

Are you in a 12 step program?

(you don't have to answer, if you don't want to)

I definitely think alcoholic is genetic for sure. When I get drunk I kinda hate it. If you can overcome it it’s respectable so congrats. Same thing for other things. People will try stuff and after one time they’re instantly addicted while other people will be like meh not for me. Idk if it’s personality or genetics or what. I just can’t believe how many people struggle with alcohol bc people never just yell out “im an alcoholic!” And I can’t believe it’s one in ten people it blows my mind kinda

It is a disease and genetic, for sure...

Do you still drink?  If so, please keep trying to stop.

For me, I had to get to the point where my body could no longer take booze - in any way, shape or form.  At least that's what they told me in AA.  Saved my life, that program did.

Here in Canada, the Government sells marijuana (which is 100% legal, here) under the same rules as the Liquor Stores use.

It's FAR less harmful than alcohol... less addictive, minimal withdrawal, much less harmful where family life and careers are concerned...

And a LOT cheaper. Like... ten times cheaper, or MORE.
