If a bear poops in the woods and there is no one around to smell it. Does it still make a stink?

Bears always sniff their poop after they've done their business.

What does this have to do with chess?  You should be asking: if a Rook falls and no body is around, does it make a sound?

From Google:

noun
noun: smell
1.
the faculty or power of perceiving odours or scents by means of the organs in the nose.

noun
noun: stink; plural noun: stinks
1.
a strong unpleasant smell; a stench.

So no; a smell is the perception of odours via the nose. Therefore, nobody around = no nose = no odour perception - i.e no smell, and therefore no stink.
