Victorious or Lucky?

Picture this scenerio: You blunder, and it looks like your oppenent has the adventage; except that he has used up about 45 seconds more (time) then you have.

You then decide to win by survival, and by time management. At the end you win and your oppenent loses to the biggest enemy of all... "time".

This is a win for you, but do you consider this tactical, do you consider this as "skill", or do you consider this as luck?

Victorious or Lucky? which one...

I think that chess is a game. And as in any game there is luck. Until the last move I believe to my victory, no matter how bad it was not my position.

Case you described - it luck, of course. But luck accompanies strong player

Thanks for the reply. It is interesting that you say "luck accompanies" a strong player. I do believe that all games have an element of luck, and luck helps you win, then maybe that is because you helped luck "set up" where you found it; like you said "luck accompanies".

Very nicely written, and too true.  It happens many times.  It helps to be quick on moves and think while the opponent is thinking and taking up his or her time, except being TOO quick could lead to blunders.  I always try to stay ahead on the clock though, because it is something to turn to if things go wrong.  The worst enemy may not be time itself, but a poor internet connection that eats up your time while you are trying to move a pawn forward a space.  Then its time.

Some chess games are not timed, and then it is purely tactical, and you can take all the time you need to make sure each piece is safely defended and that you are not making a blunder.  However, what is to say that a race with time is not tactical as well?  The game also measures how each player manages his or her time in a game.  The clock plays a big role in many sports as well.  So I do think it is tactical.  Of course, the tactics turn into luck when you reach that poor internet connection that has been my enemy so many times...
