what are we 2.0
Fh I guess we'd both agree that there are levels of control .
I mean a kleptomaniac is far more likely to steal . A person brought up in a fundamental Christian household far more likely to be Christian .
So we can accept sometimes we have to overcome things .
We have to overcome belief systems that we have adopted and natural tendencies that are troublesome to us.
Eventually maybe we get to be the real us . To do what we want .
I take your point that we can make ourselves uncomfortable.
A very shy person can sign up as a protester and stand with a megaphone . Generally we behave in a way that suits our character because it's more comfortable and more useful .
The key question for me Fh is when we get to this true us, doing what we want when we want , are we controlling what we want ?
My own feeling and experience is no . You might think well does it matter ?
Fh if this is your concept of free will then I'd say yes I accept free will exists . I accept we can do what we want . Overcome false beliefs and addictions and personality traits and just do what we want
So ultimately if this is true though we may proudly and assertively cry hey I have free will the truth is that we are just acting on a want that we have absolutely no control over .
Einstein put it differently . He said we necessarily act on needs internal and external .
Hawkins said we are biological and chemical and those things are based on causality .
Buddha said everything is connected
I'm generally caring and gentle though . To be honest I'm not that bothered if I'm sane or not as long as I'm kind and I feel the same about those around me too
I don't go out anymore. When I was single I'd hit the bars and have a little fun from time to time .
I miss that feeling when you know a woman is attracted to you . Or when you see a beautiful woman dance .
Nice !
Did you ever think about what you're saying when you say "How are you doing?" I've been thinking about it for some reason.
"How are you doing?" is a typical greeting in North America. We use it all the time, but usually without any thought of making a sincere inquiry, much less waiting to hear the answer. People all around us yearn for someome to care. David lamented this sad fact saying, "no one cares for my soul" (Ps. 142:4, ESV). We know that Jesus Christ cares, but do we? Take time to ask someone today, "How are you doing?" Then, wait for the answer.
No one ever cared for me like Juses.
There's no ther friend so kind as He;
No one else could take MY sin and darkness from me,
Oh, how much He cared for me. --Charles Weigle
I thought though I love people I'm not always charitable . There's a difference between caring and giving
you are saying its people for people to sacrifice . You don't thing people give their lives through love for others ?
For me what's relevant is you know what you see as Jesus's love is beautiful .
Don't you see this makes you beautiful too ? After all why would you love the behaviour you associate with Jesus if you weren't a beautiful person too ?
We'd both agree that many of the selections are automatic . I'm guessing you'd say these selections such as moving your legs when you want to go to the other side of the room aren't free will .
Perhaps Fh the non automatic actions aren't free will either .
Maybe the only difference between the two sort of actions are that we are aware of the actions that are complicated .
That creates this illusion we are in some way in control .
I myself hold the view that all my behaviour is natural and not in any way something I own or am responsible for and yet I still behave as I would if I held the view I had free will .
This belief isn't as crucial as you might think to your behaviour . The truth is you behave as you do whether you believe you're in control or not
